The full form of IUCN is the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 

What is IUNC

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a global organization that promotes natural resource conservation and sustainable use. It is a membership organization formed of government and civil society organizations. Its mission is to "influence, encourage, and assist societies worldwide."

Besides preserving nature's integrity and diversity, it ensures the use of natural resources. The IUCN works on various conservation issues, such as species conservation, climate change, and sustainable development. It also maintains the IUCN Red List. Red list is a well-known and authoritative list of endangered species.

History of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) began as the International Union for the Protection of Nature (IUPN) in 1948. The organization settled in response to the growing destruction of natural habitats and overexploitation of natural resources.

In 1956, the IUPN was later named the IUCN, and it has grown to become one of the world's largest and most influential conservation organizations.

Vision and goals of IUCN

The IUCN's main vision is to create a world that values and protects nature. Furthermore, the international union for conservation of nature supports fosters, and influences societies worldwide to preserve nature's fidelity and diversity. But, the IUCN is working to ensure that any use of natural resources is legal and sustainable.

IUCN develops major conferences, "the Convention on Biological Diversity,"  "the Ramsar Convention,"  and many other international agreements to carry out its mission. In addition, the IUCN encourages states to adhere to those agreements. IUCN has also developed many programs for the efficient and legal management of nature's resources. It also facilitates the implementation of nature-based solutions to various global issues.

Functions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) performs some key functions and activities. These activities are necessary to achieve the organization's mission of promoting nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Likewise, The IUCN performs the following important functions:

  • Conducting conservation-related research and providing scientific knowledge and expertise.
  • Creating and disseminating conservation policies and best practices.
  • Collaborating with governments and other organizations to carry out conservation projects and programs.
  • Keeping the IUCN Red List up to date. The red list is a recognized and authoritative list of threatened species.
  • Conservation projects and programs receive financial and technical help. The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF), The Rufford Foundation, IUCN Red List Partners, the European Commission, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and many others are providing the ongoing aid.
  • Promoting the preservation of the environment and wise use of natural resources globally.
  • Increasing capacity and offering individuals and organizations working in conservation training and education.

In general, the IUCN is instrumental in promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and furthering the global conservation agenda.

Governance and funding

Governance

The IUCN's highest decision-making body is the World Conservation Congress (Members' Assembly). Congress meets every four years. It elects the council, including the president, and approves the IUCN's work program and budget for the next four years.

The IUCN Council is the organization's primary governing body. The council sets the strategic direction for the union's activities, discusses specific policy issues, and advises on finance and membership development.

The council consists of the president, four vice presidents ( elected by the council from among its members), three regional councilors from each of IUCN's eight statutory regions, the treasurer, the chairs of IUCN's six commissions, and a councilor from the state where IUCN is headquartered (Switzerland). Razan Al Mubarak is the IUCN's president at the moment.

The Director General selected by the council oversees the secretariat's operations and the management of the IUCN. Bruno Oberle is the IUCN's director general at the moment. 

Funding

The total revenue earned by the IUCN in 2012 was 114 million CHF, roughly 95 million euros or 116 million US dollars.

Most of IUCN's funding comes from bilateral and multilateral organizations' budgets for official development help. In 2012, this accounted for 61% of its revenue. Membership dues, grants, and project funding from organizations, institutions, and businesses serve as more revenue sources.
