The full form of JAG is
Judge Advocate General which is a prestigious and powerful position. A Major General, the military's legal and judicial leader, holds the position of Judge Advocate General (JAG) in India. A separate JAG branch composed of legally trained army officers to assist the Judge Advocate General.
JAG helps in finalizing papers, providing information to government lawyers, ensuring compliance, and appearing before various tribunals and courts. In addition, JAG is similar to the rank of Lieutenant because both have extremely powerful positions.
Above all, JAG is a special entry for male and female law graduates to join the Indian Army. Male and female law graduates who are not married are asked to apply for a Short Service Commission in the Judge Advocate General Branch of the Indian Army.
Eligibility for JAG
The following are the eligibility criteria for Judge Advocate General. So if candidates want to set their career as JAG, then they must know the below eligibility criteria.
Nationality
A candidate must be either of the following to be eligible for JAG:
- a citizen of India
- a subject of Nepal
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia, as well as Vietnam, intending to settle in India permanently, provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2) and (3) above is a person who holds a certificate of eligibility in favor of India issued by the Government of India.
However, the certificate of eligibility would not be required for candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.
Age Limit
Candidate should have a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 27 years of age to be eligible for Judge Advocate General.
Additionally, candidates should be aware that the date of birth given on the Matriculation/Secondary School Examination Certificate or similar certificate will be accepted only as of the date of application submission, with no later requests for changes entertained or permitted.
Education Qualification
The following are the education qualifications needed for JAG.
- Candidate must be a law graduate (3 year/5 year degree after 10+2) with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from a College/University recognized by the Bar Council of India.
- They must be eligible for advocate registration with the Bar Council of India / State.

Salary Structure of JAG

However, the MSP to officers from lieutenant to brigadier is Rs. 15,500/- p.m. Resolved. The stipend to Gentlemen or Lady Cadets during the entire training period at the Service Academies, i.e., during the OTA, is Rs. 56,100/- per month.

How to Apply for JAG?
If anyone wants to apply for Judge Advocate General, then he/she must follow the steps given below:
- Applicants can only apply online on the website.
- They have to register by clicking on 'Officer Entry Apply/Login' and then click on 'Registration..'
- Fill in the Online Registration Form that appears on the screen after reading the instructions carefully.
- After being registered, there is an option under the dashboard, 'Apply Online'. Click on that.
- Applicants will be redirected to the page of 'Officer Selection - 'Eligibility.' Afterward, go on 'Apply, ' which is shown against the Short Service Commission JAG Entry Course.
- A page 'Application Form' will appear. Fill in the application form and click on 'Submit Now.'
- Candidates must bring out duplicate copies of their applications with roll numbers 30 minutes after the online application deadline on the last day.
