What is LXI?

LXI or LAN Extension for Instrumentation, in simple words,defines the way or standard for Ethernet based instruments to communicate, function and operate. It can also be defined as an architecture for test systems.  The LAN extension for Instrument (LXI) standard is based on the following standards that include:
  • Ethernet
  • Web interfaces
  • IEEE 1588

A Brief About the LAN Extension for Instrumentation (LXI) 

The LAN Extension for Instrumentation or LXI is an open standard which specifies how to use the Ethernet to connect to test instruments as well as build test systems.  It was developed in 2004, by LXI consortium and enables users to build distributed test systems along with local ones. Since its inception, the standards have been updated frequently and the goals of the consortium include developing, supporting and promoting the LXI standard. Many believe the LXI to be a successor of the General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) however, its features go beyond that of the GPIB. Some of its features include network based triggering, messaging and also extension for time synchronization. It also includes accurate time stamping.  The LAN Extension for Instrumentation or LXI was designed with the intention of incorporating the best features of VME Extensions for Instrumentation (VXI), PXI and General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB). The following is achieved with the help of a local area network standards.

What are the Types of LXI Devices

There are mainly three types of LAN extension for Instrumentation (LXI). These are:
  • Adapters
  • Bridges
  • Instruments 
Out of these three, the most common type is the LXI instrument. The LXI instrument, in simple words, is a single instrument that lacks both submodules or feature submodules that are connected via a proprietary interface.  These instruments or devices are LXI compliant and undergo a process in lieu of the LXI compliance. On the other hand, we have the bridges. These act as a gateway from LXI to non-LXI buses. These bridges are fully LXI compliant, with an exception of the downstream non LXI devices. These do whoever offer a fully compliant interface for each downstream non LXI device.  Many LXI devices or instruments come in various shapes and sizes and are required to use the RJ45 Ethernet connector to ensure flexibility in designing their test system. This is also a reason why LXI devices support GPIB and USB interfaces. 

What is the LXI Consortium?

The LXI Consortium is an industry that maintains the specification of the LXI and promotes the LXI standard whilst also ensuring interoperability. You can find members of the consortium all over the globe and includes companies that manufacture instruments, users and also includes some universities. 

Extended Functions of the LXI 

The core features of LXI ensure multi-vendor interoperability in addition to instruments with more capability. The latest versions of LXI devices allow these instruments to be synchronized to a master clock. This means that the LXI instruments can collect data set and correlate them to a common time base. Even if the instruments are spread or distributed across long distances, it is able to correlate the common time base.  These LXI instruments that have extended functions also allow communication with each other without the intervention of a host controller. With the capabilities you can:
  • Implement precise time stamping. This allows you to discover when operations occurred in the test program.
  • Optimize the performance of the system. This can be done by creating a built-in triggering mechanism which eliminates the WAIT statements that are normally used to pace test sequences.
  • You can also create a shutdown sequence if there is a fault without relying on the application program
Let us take an example of the LXI 1.4. This instrument allows users to access capabilities that are not found on the LAN based instrument. These capabilities include: Event logs of LXI With the help of the LXI log, you can understand what is happening in your system. Because it records events, you can see what the entire system or an instrument is doing. Some events recorded include:
  •  Setting a trigger
  • Taking measurements
  • Enabling outputs of a power supply
Event Messaging With LXI event messaging, devices can signal each other via the Ethernet cable on events or time. This feature allows the system to run on low latency in applications that are paced by triggered events.  Time Stamping The LXI time stamping feature allows you to stamp LAN events. These events can include triggers, measurements or change of state in the channel. The purpose of the time stamp is to know when what event was triggered and is useful in troubleshooting and data analysis. Wired Trigger Bus (WTB) This is an optional feature that allows instruments to trigger one another directly.  The Wired Trigger Bus or WTB uses a terminated transmission line that has eight separate channels that lets LXI instruments connect to it.
