Full form of MNREGA, What is the MGNREGS?

The Full form of MNREGA is Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee. It is commonly referred to as MNREGA is a scheme launched by the Union government in 2021-22. 

It was earlier called the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. This scheme is all about providing the right work to the right people in a right place. It follows article 46, which states to work for the economic upliftment and advancement of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled tribes without any discrimination.

Objectives of MNREGA

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has the following objectives-

• To provide 100 days of guaranteed employment to rural village adults.
• To increase economic security and to provide employment.
• To decrease the migration of labor from rural to urban areas.

MNREGA differentiates itself from other employment schemes as it attempts to make a grassroots-driven approach to employing people. Guaranteed work is given without delaying payment.

This scheme is funded by the central government which bears all the cost of the work and the cost of material required. Ever since the scheme was implemented, the employment rates have increased by 240% as reported. The scheme was successful in maintaining economic stability and empowerment in rural areas of India. It is more of a demand-driven program that includes work like building roads to toilets. Apart from providing economic stability it also works to protect the environment, empowering rural women and adults, reduce migration of workers, and most importantly fostering social equity in rural areas.

Key Features of MNREGA

• Gives employment to adult members of rural households who are willing to do unskilled labor work subject to a maximum of 100 days.
• Every village and each rural household is applicable for this.
• Job cards are issued for every household under this, within 15 days from the date of registration.
• The labor work will be provided within 5 kilometers distance from their house/ village.
• If the work is beyond the 5 km distance then an extra 10% of the wage is given to them
• There is equal payment for men and women.
• Wages are paid fortnight, i.e. every 15 days.
• There is a compulsion for ⅓ beneficiaries to be women to create equal rights.
• Worksite facilities such as toilets, and a creche should be available.

What is the Role of Gram Sabha and Gram Panchayat in MGNREGA?

The Role of Gram Sabha in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme are given below -

• It provides a list of work roles in priority order with respect to a different area.
• Determines the daily work requirement in different local areas.
• It forms a platform to deal with all the queries related to work.
• Supervise the work allocated and make sure it is done on time.

Who is eligible for MNREGA?

There is an eligibility criterion set by the government so that it can benefit the most people-

• A person must be a citizen of India
• At the time of registration, he/she must be of at least 18 years.
• A person must be from a local household.
• A person must be ready for unskilled labor work.

A job card is like an identity card issued to the household which consists of all the details of the adult member who has worked under the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA. It is important for every worker to get themselves registered for employment work.

It ensures transparency for the work and prevents any kind of fraud against them and serves as documentary proof.
