The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is an Indian law enforcement and intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs, established in 1986. It is responsible for combating drug trafficking and the illicit drug trade in India. The NCB works to identify, investigate, and prosecute drug trade offenders and implement preventive measures to reduce the demand and supply of drugs. 

The mandate of the NCB is to deter, detect, and disrupt the production, trafficking, and abuse of controlled substances in India. In addition to its enforcement activities, the NCB also works to improve awareness, educate the public on the dangers of drugs and drug abuse, and provide support to those affected by the illegal drug trade. 

The NCB also collaborates with various other law enforcement and investigative agencies in India and internationally to ensure the effectiveness of its operations. The NCB also works with civil society organizations and other stakeholders to ensure that the rights of victims of drug abuse are respected and offered assistance.  

Additionally, the NCB also conducts research on drug addiction, drug trafficking, and related topics to improve its operations and inform public policy on drug abuse.

•  NCB is responsible for maintaining and updating the National Data Bank on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and related matters. 
•  NCB works with the Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs to monitor and control the production, possession, and trafficking of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
•  NCB provides expert advice to the Central Government on narcotics, psychotropic substances, and related matters.
•  NCB collaborates with other national and international organizations to tackle drug trafficking.
•  NCB maintains and updates the National Register of Treatment Providers and Narcotic Drug Dependents.
•  NCB is responsible for conducting research and development activities on narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
•  NCB is responsible for preparing and updating the National Strategy on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
• NCB coordinates with the state and local law enforcement agencies to create a coordinated response against drug trafficking.
•  NCB engages in public awareness campaigns and public education programs to create awareness regarding the dangerous effects of drug abuse and trafficking.

The NCB and the Youth

The Vision of the NCB is to create a society free of narcotics, where the threat of drug trafficking and abuse is eliminated, and the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs and related substances is drastically reduced. The NCB actively work towards achieving this vision through its collective efforts to prohibit the illicit traffic of narcotics and to eliminate the risks of misuse of pharmaceutical drugs and other related substances.

Apart from the enforcement activities; the NCB, also works to support families and communities affected by drugs and sensitize them about the dangers of illicit drugs. The NCB plans to establishe a drug-free society by working towards prevention, intervention, treatment and rehabilitation of the abusers. 

The NCB also works towards establishing a robust international partnership in combating drug trafficking and preventing drug abuse. The Agency also imparts training to its personnel in various aspects of law enforcement and intelligence. This is done to gather concerning drug trafficking and abuse.
