Full Form of NEXT, National Eligibility Exit Test

The NEXT full form is the National Eligibility Exit Test. It was introduced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the National Medical Commission Bill 2019. This exam aimed to test the overall knowledge of the candidate after successful completion of the MBBS course. The government intends to replace this examination with the NEET PG which is the gateway for admission to MD and MS courses in India. 

With the introduction of the NEXT exam, the government aims to produce a skilled batch of Medical graduates in the country. This exam will also act as a screening test for those who are pursuing medicine from abroad colleges. Here on this page, you can get more details associated with it.  

NEXT Eligibility Criteria

  • As per the NEXT eligibility criteria, a candidate must have passed the MBBS course from a recognised medical institute with at least 50% marks in aggregate.
  • Candidates who are in the final year of the MBBS course are also allowed to appear in the NEXT exam. 

NEXT Exam Pattern

As per the rules, the exam will be conducted in two parts. Namely, Part 1 will be an objective-based paper. Whereas Part 2 is going to be organised by the university. 

Next Part I - Written Test

  • The examination is going to be held in a span of three days with two papers every day.
  • The questions in the exam will be objective based.
  • Candidates will have to write the NEXT exam before taking up the internship period.
  • In the exam, 60% of the questions will test problem skills, 30% of questions from reading comprehension and analysis and 10% of recall questions.

NEXT Part II - Practical

  • The NEXT Part II is going to be a practical exam and a candidate will be able to appear it after completing the internship period
  • The questions in the exam will be image-based
  • Post qualifying for the exam, based on their performance they will be allowed to either practice Medicine or can enroll for the PG examination
