A full form of NIPUN is "National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy".
What is NIPUN
The National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) was launched by the Ministry of Education under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
To begin with, the NIPUN Bharat Mission was started on 5th July 2021. The objective of the mission is that every child receives universal proficiency in foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) by Grade 3.
The NIPUN mission strategy is to accomplish this goal by 2026-27. However, the main priority is that every student achieves basic learning requirements (i.e., reading, writing, and arithmetic at the foundational level).
So, the focus area is to retain all the students till the completion of their foundational learning, update training modules, and expand teacher capacity.
Thus, all the State/UT governments need to prepare an implementation plan to achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy in all primary schools. Also, they need to identify stage-wise targets to be accomplished and monitor the progress of the same.
Who is Eligible for NIPUN?
Mentioned below is the list of who can avail of the benefits offered under the NIPUN Bharat Mission Scheme:
- The scheme focuses on children whose ages are between 3-9 years.
- It also emphasizes students studying in preschools to 3rd standard.
- Children who are studying in Classes 4 and 5 without a foundational skill will also receive support, guidance, and study resources to enhance their educational proficiency skills.
- Moreover, it is crucial for all the govt, government-aided, and private schools to achieve the objectives of this mission. This will help to accomplish the universal acquisition of FLN skills by 2026-27.
What are the Benefits of the NIPUN Bharat Mission
Check the features of the NIPUN Bharat Scheme to understand the objectives in a better manner:
- The goal of the mission is established in the form of Targets for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) or Lakshya Soochi. Although, the main objective is to attain the desired learning results by Grade 3.
- In order to spread awareness among parents, volunteers, the community, etc, the scheme has moved Lakshyas from Balvatika to Grade 3.
- Basically, the Lakshyas are established on the learning guidelines prepared by NCERT and international research and ORF studies.
Thus, this mission aims to enhance the learning skills of every child. For example, a child will be able to read a minimum of 60 words per minute of a complete text after passing grade 3.
