The full form of NRSC is the National Remote Sensing Centre.
The NRSC is dedicated to providing remote sensing services to support natural resource management and sustainable development.
Since September 1, 2008, the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) at Hyderabad has been a full-fledged ISRO centre. Earlier, NRSC was an autonomous body called the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) under the Department of Space (DOS). NRSC is headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. Regional centres are in Bangalore, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Delhi (previously in Dehradun), and Nagpur.
The primary role of NRSC is to provide remote sensing data and information services to meet requirements in natural resource management and sustainable development. NRSC operates ground-receiving stations and collects data from various satellites, including the IRS series.
The NRSC data produces various products such as digital elevation models, land use/land cover maps, geological and soil maps, crop type maps and fire risk maps.
NRSC also provides consultancy services and technical training in remote sensing and GIS applications. It has collaborated with several international organisations to carry out several natural resource assessment and management projects.
In addition, NRSC also develops and provides software and hardware products related to remote sensing and applications. The software products include image processing and analysis software, Geographic Information System (GIS) software and a range of other software utilities. NRSC also manufactures hardware products such as GPS receivers and micro-controller-based data loggers.
Remote sensing is a technology that uses the earth's resources to observe the environment to better understand its features and dynamics. NRSC utilises state-of-the-art remote sensing technology to acquire, process, analyse, and interpret space data to support India's development.
Remote sensing understands and monitors India's many natural resources, including agricultural resources, land use, water, climate and climate change, and biodiversity. It is one of the most efficient and cost-effective tools for the country's economic development.
Remote sensing applications enable governments to make informed decisions about water resources, food security, land degradation of land and other important environmental and economic issues.
India has become an increasingly important player in the global remote sensing market due to its vast population, large and rapidly expanding economy, and strong governance.
As a result, it has become one of the largest users of remote sensing technology. India has also been actively involved in international joint research activities related to remote sensing and its development.
In addition to being a major user of remote sensing technology, India has been one of the most prominent countries that have benefited from it economically.
Additionally, Remote sensing enables India to identify areas of good natural resources, improve agricultural productivity, and empower farmers by providing information on the availability, quality and potential of soil resources.
It has also helped India to keep track of its precious wildlife populations and their habitats, monitor the climate and weather conditions, monitor the impacts of climate change on its ecological systems, and more.
With the rapidly changing environment, the NRSC has been striving to adapt and develop relevant solutions to keep up with the times. Hence, this resulted in the transformation of the NRSC from a primarily government-run entity to an organisation that provides solutions across several industries.
Moreover, with innovative solutions, the NRSC is expanding its data collection capabilities through active collaborations with government, private, and international organisations.
NRSC is already providing solutions in agricultural and natural resource management, disaster management and relief, national security, 3D mapping of terrain, and agricultural automation.
With this in mind, NRSC is looking to collaborate with both public and private organisations to serve the Indian and global markets and to bring real-time, affordable solutions to the everyday user.
