What is the PSC?

The PSC or the public service commission was mandated under article 315 - 323 to assist the respective state governments with matters pertaining to transfers, recruitment, as well as disciplinary actions.

It is well known that the UPSC, or the Union Public Service Commission, conducts the IAS exam every year to recruit candidates for group A and group B services. Similarly, the PSC also conducts recruitment exams for Group A officers and, in some cases, Group B officials in the state administration.

What are the Functions of the PSC?

Let us take a look at some of the functions of the PSC.

  • Firstly, the respective state’s PSC is responsible for undertaking local audits of government agencies as well as boards on promotions, transfers, and disciplinary proceedings. Additionally, the PSC is also responsible for identifying reform possibilities and communicating policy changes to the government.
  • Secondly, their role also includes advising the government on the governance structure of the government, policies, and practices, in addition to government-to-government strategies.
  • Thirdly, they have to oversee as well as implement government programmes for education and training, plan successions, manage performance as well as recognise achievement, in addition to staff mobility and management.
  • Lastly, commissioners are responsible for advising the government and developing service delivery.

The PSC Exam: An Overview

The purpose of the PSC exam is to recruit candidates for different government positions in different states.

Further, the exam is held in three stages.

  • The preliminary stage
  • The major or main exam
  • And lastly, an interview round.

Of course, the candidate can only give the interview if he or she clears both the preliminary exam and the main exam. Furthermore, the nature of the exam is objective; however, the syllabus is not the same from state to state. This means that each state has its own syllabus.

The challenge here is competition. Every year, over 100,000 people apply, but only a few hundred seats are available. The competition is so steep that each mark counts. As a result, if you want to pass all rounds, you should hurry up and start studying right away.
