What is an SI?
A sub-inspector (SI) is a lower-ranking officer in command of a station house where he or she is assigned to perform his/her duties.
The SI is also responsible for administering and preserving civil order that falls under his authority. Similarly, the sub-inspector has the authority to submit a charge sheet in court, acts as the initial investigator, and also acts as a link between the higher and lower rank police officers.
However, an SI is not in a position to investigate cases that are entrusted to senior management, such as the CID or DSP.

The general responsibilities of a sub-inspector are as follows:

What are the Powers of an SI?
An SI has the power to:
- Disperse any unauthorized gathering of five or more people that could disrupt civil safety.
- Probe perceptible offenses and apprehend those who implicate an indictable offense under the following sections: 154, 156, and 41(1a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure without a magistrate’s direction.
- Invoke Article 165 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure) to carry out a house/property search during an investigation of a notorious crime.
- In accordance with Articles 149 and 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, prohibit authority from committing any wrongdoings or arrest anyone associated with a wrongdoing.
How to Become an SI?
To become a superintendent (SI), the candidate must fulfill the following criteria:

- The minimum height requirement for general male candidates is 170 cm, whereas the chest measurement should be between 80 cm (normal) and 85 cm (on expansion).
- where the height requirement for male candidates from ST is 162.5 cm and the chest should measure 77 cm (normal) to 82 cm(on expansion).
- On the other hand, male candidates from hill areas should have a minimum height of 160 cm and the chest should measure 80-85 cm.
- For general female candidates, the height requirement is 157 cm.
- For female candidates from ST and Hill areas, the height requirements are 154cm and 155 cm respectively.
