
The SPG Commando full form is Special Protection Group Commando. These are managed by the agency named Special Protection Group that works directly under the Home Ministry. Their line of work includes protecting the prime minister and their immediate family members. This agency was formed in the year 1988 by an Act of the Parliament of India.
Earlier, the SPG Commando served in the security team of the Prime Minister during his tenure in the office and after vacating the office. However, the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed in the Parliament after which this mandate was removed. Now, the SPG is only entrusted to provide security to the current Prime Minister during his tenure in office.
SPG was formed in the year 1988 to provide security to the Prime Minister and his immediate family members. Before that, the security of PM was with the Special Security District, Delhi Police. However, after the assassination of PM Indira Gandhi by her two security guards. A committee of the Home Ministry was set up and submitted its report stating that a separate unit should be elected whose main line of work includes providing security to only the PM.

Generally, the selection of an SPG Commando is done by the personnel who are already working with the force as IPS officers or are personnel with the BSF, ITBP and CRPF. The selection process includes a written test, Personal Interview, Psychometric test and physical test.
Those who manage to clear all the rounds of the selection process are inducted as an SPG commandos. Whereas, those who fail to do this are given a second chance in the next batch. In case, the personnel fails again then he is sent back to his parent unit.
Post qualifying for the selection process, the SPG commandoes are entrusted to go for heavy training. These personnels are kept on a probation period of three months. During this period, they are entrusted to learn all high-end martial arts and learn to use difficult weapons to combat any adverse situations.
As per a new rule under the Right to Information Act, 2005 these commnados are exempted from disclosing any internal information regarding their work ethics, conduct etc to the general public. During the service and post retirement, they are not allowed to participate in any journal, publishing etc.
