The term SWAYAM is an acronym for Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds. It is an Indian government initiative to offer online courses for students and teachers. SWAYAM was launched on 9th July 2017 under the Digital India campaign to provide free courses for high school subjects, advanced education, and skill development. Additionally, the objective behind launching the SWAYAM portal is to offer three major principles of education, namely equity, access, and quality.

The SWAYAM was formerly developed and managed by AICTE and MHRD with the help of professionals from Microsoft. However, presently it is managed by IIT Madras, NPTEL, with the help of Persistent System Ltd. and GooSWAYAM Full Form, Aim, Objectives, Features, Study Materialsgle Inc.

Aim and Objective of SWAYAM

The primary objective of the SWAYAM portal is to help the disadvantaged students of India get quality education free of cost. Additionally, the courses offered through this platform reduce the gap among students by including everyone in the digitalisation of education.

Education Approaches Under SWAYAM

In order to achieve its objective, the SWAYAM portal follows four teaching approaches. These methods help students understand the syllabus topics and prepare them to score well in the exams.

The following points briefly explain each of these teaching approaches:

1. Video Lectures

Interactive classes are most effective in helping students learn a topic better. Considering this factor SWAYAM portal provides interactive video lectures from subject matter experts.

2. Readable Study Materials

The portal also provides conveniently downloadable study materials in PDF, PPT, and other digital formats. Additionally, all the subject matter experts develop these materials to help students improve their learning and excel in exams.

3. Test Series

Regular assessments help students understand their weaknesses. Therefore, SWAYAM conducts quizzes and tests repeatedly to evaluate students’ knowledge and encourage them to perform better.

4. Discussion Forum

Students can qualify for school and competitive exams with good scores if they thoroughly understand all the topics and concepts. And for this, it is essential to clarify their doubts. Therefore, SWAYAM holds discussion sessions where students can ask their queries to faculty members.

Beneficiaries of SWAYAM

Students throughout the country are eligible to learn using SWAYAM approaches. However, the government also provides access to some foreign nationals. The beneficiaries of SWAYAM include the following:

• Students who are in class 9th to Post-graduation.
• Candidates of professional streams like engineering, medicine, arts, agriculture, law, etc.
• In 2019 the central government allowed faculties and students of Afghanistan educational institutions to enrol on SWAYAM MOOC for academic purposes.

National Coordinators of SWAYAM

Presently there are nine national coordinators for different courses and educational levels. These include the following:

• All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE for international and self-paced courses.
• University Grants Commission or UGC for post-graduate and non-technical programs.
• National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research or NITTTR for teaching related courses.
• National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning or NPTEL managing Engineering courses.
• Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU to regulate courses of open university.
• National Council for Educational Research Training or NCERT for class 9th to 12 students enrolled under affiliated schools.
• Consortium for Educational Communication or CEC for undergraduate courses.
• National Institute of Open Schooling or NIOS for class 9th to 12th students who choose open schooling.
• IIM Bangalore for management courses.

Features of SWAYAM

SWAYAM comes with the following features in order to provide quality education to all students:

• Students can access educational content available on SWAYAM from convenient locations. However, they need a proper internet connection and supportive devices to start their learning journey.
• To enhance the learning capacity of students, all the educational courses of SWAYAM are available in audio-visual format.
• The interaction forum of SWAYAM helps students clarify doubts related to any topic of their course or syllabus.
• Once students complete a course available on the platform, they need to take an exam. After they pass the exam, they get a certificate for that particular course.
• Professors and experts from universities develop all the academic content and courses available on SWAYAM. Therefore, students get high-quality study materials to enhance their knowledge and exam preparation.
• SWAYAM conducts certification exams in a proctored manner to avoid unfair practices. Therefore, all the certifications are highly valued by employers during the recruitment process.

• According to UGC notification, all the credits earned through SWAYAM courses are transferred to students’ academic records in colleges or universities.
