  • Central Teacher Eligibility Test or CTET: This exam is conducted by CBSE to shortlist candidates for schools run by the Central Government of India. CTET-certified applicants are required to teach in UT schools as well.
  • State Teacher Eligibility Test or STET: This exam is administered by the State Government of India. Therefore, it invites applications from people wishing to pursue a teaching career in their respective states.
  • National Eligibility Test or NET: This is held by colleges and universities to select academically sound individuals who want to work as Assistant Professors or Junior Research Fellows.

Eligibility Criteria to Become a Teacher

A bachelor's degree in education (B.Ed.) is required for candidates to become teachers in India. One might also take a master's degree in education (M.Ed) to supplement their qualifications and boost their employability. Candidates may also pursue a Basic Training Certificate (BTC), a Diploma in Education (D.Ed), or a Teaching Training Certificate, depending on their interests. However, candidates who want to get recruited for government jobs through the CBES need to take the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). CBSE administers this exam for the employment of teachers in grades 1st through 8th.
  • To become a teacher, a candidate must hold a B.Ed or Bachelor of Education degree with at least 55% marks. However, the minimum qualifying percentage varies between schools.
  • Additionally, some colleges require a master's degree in the corresponding discipline in addition to a B.Ed degree to teach upper classes.
