The UKPSC Exam, also known as the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission Exam, is conducted by the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UKPSC). It is a state-level Exam conducted to recruit candidates for various administrative positions in Uttarakhand.

The UKPSC Exam is conducted in three different stages: 

• The Preliminary Exam,
• The Main Exam, and 
• The Interview. 

The preliminary Exam is a screening test for this Exam. At the same time, the main Exam is a comprehensive test and checks the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the relevant subjects. The interview is the final stage of the selection process for the UKPSC Exam.

History of the UKPSC Exam

The Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UKPSC) was established on March 14, 2001. After the creation of Uttarakhand as a separate State. The UKPSC is responsible for conducting various competitive Exams and recruitment processes to fill various administrative positions in the Uttarakhand state.

First UKPSC Exam

The first UKPSC Exam was conducted in the year 2003, which is a Preliminary Exam for the Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination. Since that, this Exam has been conducted every year, with thousands of candidates appearing for the Exam.

Over the years, the UKPSC has undergone many changes and reforms in its Exam pattern, selection process and syllabus. The commission has introduced new subjects in the syllabus and updated the Exam pattern to keep up with the changing demands of the administrative positions in Uttarakhand State.

Today, the UKPSC Exam is considered one of the most prestigious and competitive Exams in Uttarakhand State. It attracts many young aspirants from across the state looking to build careers in civil services and administrative positions.

Eligibility for the UKPSC Exam

The eligibility criteria for the UKPSC Exam will include the following:

• Nationality: The aspirants must be a citizen of India.
• Age Limit: The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and be at most 42 years of age on the first day of the year in which year the Examination will be held.
• Educational Qualification: The aspirant must have a Bachelor’s degree in any stream or an equivalent qualification from any recognised university.
• Physical Standards: The candidate must fulfill the minimum physical standards prescribed by the UKPSC Exam format.

Note that age relaxation will be provided to the reserved category candidates per the government rules.

Candidates must fulfil all other requirements mentioned in the notification of the UKPSC Exam, including details such as the number of attempts allowed, minimum qualifying marks, and other criteria.

Exam pattern for UKPSC

The UKPSC Exam will be conducted in three stages: 

• The Preliminary Exam,
• The Main Exam, and 
• The Interview.

The Preliminary Exam 

It consists of two papers, both are objective types with multiple choice questions. The first is the General Studies paper, which tests the candidate's knowledge of current affairs, history, geography, polity, economics, science and technology, and environmental studies. 

The second paper is the Aptitude Test, which tests the candidate's knowledge of logical and analytical reasoning abilities, comprehension, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Both papers are 200 marks each, with a duration of two hours for each paper.

Candidates who clear the Preliminary Exam will be eligible for the Main Exam. 

The Mains Exam

The Main Exam of UKPSC consists of six papers, of which four are compulsory, and two are optional. The four compulsory papers are General Hindi, Essay, General Studies I, and General Studies II, each of which is of 200 marks. 

The candidate will select the two optional papers from a list of subjects provided by the commission, and each paper is 200 marks. The duration of each paper is three hours.

The interview

Candidates who clear the Main Exam will be called for the Interview, which is of 200 marks. The candidate’s personality, communication skills, and general knowledge will be checked in this Interview test.

Final Merit

The final merit list of marks will be prepared on the basis of  obtained marks by the candidate in the Main Exam and the Interview. The weightage given to the Main Exam and the Interview is 85% and 15%, respectively.

Syllabus for the UKPSC Exam

The syllabus for the UKPSC Exam is as follows:

Preliminary Exam:

Paper I – General Studies:

History of India, Environmental Ecology and Biodiversity, Indian and World Geography, Current events of national and international importance, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, General Science and Technology.

Paper II – Aptitude Test:

Comprehension, including communication skills, Interpersonal skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, General mental ability,  Decision-making and problem-solving, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) and data interpretation.

Main Exam:

Paper I – General Hindi: Hindi comprehension, grammar, and language usage.

Paper II – Essay: Candidates must write two essays on given topics.

Paper III – General Studies I:

History of India (ancient, medieval, and modern), Indian National Movement, Geography of India, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology and Biodiversity, and Current Events of National and International Importance.

Paper IV – General Studies II:

Indian Constitution, Public Administration, Political System and Governance, International Relations and Diplomacy, Social Justice and Rights Issues, Economic and Social Development, Science and Technology, Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.

Paper V and VI – Optional Papers:

Candidates must choose two optional subjects from the list provided by the commission. The commission will provide the syllabus for each subject.

Interview:

Personality Test, Communication Skills, and General Knowledge.
