UPSC and MPSC
UPSC stands for Union Public Service Commission. It is a national agency that conducts various examinations to shortlist and recruit eligible candidates for government posts. On the other hand, MPSC is an acronym for Maharashtra Public Service Commission. Additionally, it is responsible for conducting recruitment exams to select candidates for civil services posts. Although both commissions are known for offering government jobs to shortlisted candidates, their job location varies. For example, while UPSC posts candidates anywhere in India, MPSC officers are recruited within the boundary of the Maharashtra state legislature.

Exams Conducted by UPSC and MPSC

Civil Service Examination (CSE) and State Service Examination (SSE) are the most anticipated recruitment exams of UPSC and MPSC, respectively. Exam Pattern of UPSC MPSC

Broadly UPSC and MPSC exams have three stages, namely:
  • Preliminary exam
  • Main exam
  • Personal interview
Candidates need to qualify for each round in order to appear for the next exam. However, the subjects and topics of both exams differ from each other. Therefore, it is important to know the details of their exam pattern separately. UPSC Preliminary Exam  UPSC CSE Preliminary examination consists of 2 MCQ papers, namely GS 1 and CSAT. Additionally, both papers are qualifying in nature. Therefore, the marks scored in this exam are not considered for the final merit list. However, candidates must pass this stage to take the Mains exam.  Furthermore, candidates must remember that 1/3rd of the marks are deducted for an incorrect answer. Therefore, it is crucial to have a thorough knowledge of each topic in order to avoid unnecessary deduction of marks. The following table provides the details of the UPSC Prelim exam:

UPSC Main Exam This is a descriptive exam where candidates need to answer all the questions in an elaborate manner. Additionally, there are a total of 9 papers, which include two language papers. However, the language papers are qualifying in nature, and the commission does not include their marks for the merit list. The remaining seven papers consist of 250 marks each. Moreover, candidates need to perform well in all the papers to make it to the Mains merit list. UPSC Interview This is the last stage of UPSC recruitment. Additionally, the interview consists of 275 marks. In order to score distinction marks in this stage, candidates need to strengthen the following aspects:

  • Crisis management
  • Moral and intellectual integrity
MPSC Preliminary Exam MPSc Prelims consists of two papers that are qualifying in nature. Although candidates get 2 marks for each correct answer in paper 1, an incorrect answer leads to a deduction of 1⁄4 mark. However, there is no negative marking on the second paper.  Additionally, the commission releases answer keys shortly after the exam. Therefore, candidates can perform a self-evaluation to anticipate their Prelims scores. Moreover, to pass this exam, every candidate needs to score a minimum of 33% marks. MPSC Main Exam Candidates scoring the minimum cut-off marks in the Prelim round are shortlisted for the Main exam. Additionally, this round consists of six, which includes one descriptive paper and 5 MCQ papers. Although in the subjective paper, there isn't any negative marking, the objective ones have ¼ mark deduction for each incorrect answer. Furthermore, the qualifying mark for reserved candidates is 40, and for unreserved candidates, it's 45. MPSC Interview This is the final selection round of MPSC. In this exam, the interviewer's panel looks at the academic and career details, knowledge of current affairs, hobbies, and candidates' personalities. Accordingly, they allot marks to and make the final merit list of selected candidates.
