WAT

Written ability test or WAT as the name suggests is a writing test that is held to check the writing skills of MBA Aspirants. It is conducted by all 20 IIMs of India.

The MBA aspirants seeking admission to the Indian Institute of Management must have qualified CAT to sit in the WAT. It means the written Ability Test is only conducted for CAT-qualified students.

WAT and personal interviews are the final round of the selection of top IIMs and other Business schools.

This pen-paper test is held to evaluate the knowledge, writing ability, vocabulary and grammar of the MBA Candidates. The duration of the test is 15 to 30 minutes.

The topics of the test are provided to the candidates at the time of the test itself. They have to form opinions about the topic on the spot. That's why it is considered quite hard to crack.

Additionally, WAT not only helps officials to access their performance easily but also helps candidates to jot down their thoughts without any hesitation and fear of interruption.

The IIMs' officials select the topic of WAT from any of the facts happening around us.

The questions in the written ability test may come from Economics, Finance, Business, current affairs, politics or social issues, etc., but this list is not exhaustive.

Hence, if you are planning to complete your business administration studies from any 20 National IIMs, you cannot live this dream without qualifying for the WAT Exam.

So, Start your preparation and focus on your writing skill. Read newspapers daily and practice writing on different national and international affairs.

However, ultimately, The written ability test and a personal interview will together determine your admission to your favourite IIM.

Finally, After graduating from IIMs, Students become eligible to get premium jobs in banking, finance, Marketing, Information technology, consulting, etc.

Conclusion

Hence, the topics of IIMs may be philosophical, Persuasive, or based on Current affairs. Eventually, nobody knows what is going to come. It is extremely important to perform well in WAT even if you have scored a very good mark in CAT. You will not be able to go to IIMs without WAT.

The weightage of WAT in some of the top IIMs, such as Allahabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, or Lucknow, is from 10% to 15%, and in other IIMs, It may extend to 40%. Some expected topics for the year 2023 are Article 370 Abrogation, coronavirus impact, National logistics policy, citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, Budget 2023, Gig Economy, or Free metro Ride for women.

At last, a writing test in WAT is done to check the critical and logical approach. The officials may also ask questions from WAT topics during your interview. Top tankers' advice is to jot down the structure in their mind before starting to write. Keep your writing neat, concise, expressive, and readable, and avoid repetition and ambiguous sentences.

It is not a vocabulary or advanced English test. So, avoid complex words. Write to express your perspective simply with fewer grammatical errors.
