What is a World Trade Organization (WTO)?

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the global forum for trade negotiations and administration. It facilitates the operation of fair and predictable trade between its member countries, promoting economic growth and development.

Furthermore, the World Trade Organization actively manages the global trade system. It promotes fair and predictable trade between its member countries, driving economic growth and development. Additionally, it sets international trade rules and enforces them, serving as a platform for member countries to resolve disputes.

Overall the organisation collects and analyses trade data, using it to inform policy decisions that shape the future of global trade. Moreover, WTO plays a crucial role in ensuring that trade flows smoothly, freely, predictably, and fairly. Also making it a key player in the global economy

WTO: History

The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established in 1995 as a successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Moreover, its goal is to promote free and fair trade among member countries by enforcing rules. Also, by providing a forum for negotiations and ensuring transparency in the global trading system.

Moreover, WTO currently has 164 member countries, accounting for nearly 98% of world trade. Furthermore, the organisation works to reduce barriers to trade, such as tariffs and subsidies. Also, it provides a platform for member countries to resolve disputes peacefully.

However, throughout its history, the WTO has played a crucial role in promoting trade liberalisation. Also, in supporting the development of developing countries. Additionally, in the late 1990s, the WTO successfully concluded the Uruguay Round of negotiations, which created new rules for trade in goods and services. Thus established the WTO as the central institution for managing the global trading system.

Furthermore, over the years, the WTO has faced challenges and criticism from various quarters. Some argue that the organisation is biased in favour of developed countries and does not do enough to support developing countries. On the other hand, others argue that the WTO's rules must be updated and reflect the realities of the modern global economy.

However, despite these challenges, the WTO remains an important player in the global trading system.

WTO: Functions

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is a platform for member countries to promote free and fair trade globally. It functions by performing the following key activities:
