Aditya L1 Mission Launch Live Updates, India's First Solar Mission

Aditya L1 Mission: The Indian Space Research Organization, ISRO, plans to launch Aditya L1, the country's first space-based solar mission, on September 2, 2023. ISRO's Aditya L1 mission aims to provide novel insight into the sun's behaviors by positioning itself in a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth system's Lagrange Point 1 (L1).

ISRO has announced the launch of the Aditya L1 mission to explore the sun following the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. It will be India's first solar mission, which could transform our understanding of solar dynamics and space weather.

Aditya L1 Mission Overview

Aditya-L1 is a satellite developed by ISRO for remote solar studies. It is equipped with seven unique payloads. Out of which, five are provided by ISRO, with the remaining two coming from academic institutes that collaborate with the Indian Space Research Organization. ISRO's Aditya-L1 mission will remain in Earth-bound orbit for 16 days after its successful launch. Further, Aditya-L1 will do five maneuvers during this time to achieve the necessary velocity for its voyage.

Aditya L1 Mission Highlights

ISRO is going to launch its first-ever solar mission, Aditya-L1, on Saturday at 11:50 A.M., September 2, 2023.
  • The Aditya-L1 mission's target is to position itself in a halo orbit around one of the five Lagrangian points (L1) in the Sun-Earth system.
  • The Aditya-L1 satellite is expected to enter orbit around mid-January 2024.
  • Following that, ISRO will do system tests in order to verify that everything functions effectively.
  • The Indian Space Research Organization expects to get regular data from Aditya-L1 by the end of February 2024.

Aditya L1 Mission launch Time

The Aditya-L1 mission is scheduled to launch at 11:50 A.M. on September 2, 2023. Aditya-L1 will be able to examine a clear view of the sun and its effect on environmental conditions in close proximity to Earth and other planets in real time if the landing proceeds as planned.

ISRO Aditya L1 Mission Key Objective

The Aditya-L1 mission's primary goals include studying solar wind acceleration, coronal heating, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), the dynamics of the solar atmosphere, and temperature anisotropy. According to ISRO, there are five Lagrangian points between the sun and the Earth, with the L1 position being a halo orbit that provides the significant benefit of continuous solar observation without interruptions due to eclipses.

Aditya L1 Mission LIVE - Importance of Studying Sun From Space

Studying the sun from space is necessary for the following reasons:
  • The sun emits various types of radiation and energetic particles.
  • Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field protect it from harmful solar radiation.
  • Instruments on Earth can't detect some solar radiation due to this protection.
  • To study these radiations, observations need to be made from space only.
  • Furthermore, measuring solar wind particles and magnetic fields in interplanetary space far from Earth's magnetic influence can only be done from space.

Aditya L1 Solar Mission Launch Time

Somanath, the current chairman of ISRO, announced the Aditya-L1 launch date and time. On Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 11:50 a.m., the nation's first solar observatory mission will be launched. He further added that it could take 165 days for the Aditya-L1 satellite to reach its optimal radius.

Aditya L1 Mission Trajectory

The Aditya-L1 satellite will first be placed into low-Earth orbit. It will then be launched towards the Lagrange 1 point via the onboard propulsion system.
  • As the Aditya-L1 spacecraft journeys toward the L1 point, it will pass beyond Earth's gravitational sphere of influence.
  • The cruise phase will begin after the Aditya-L1 satellite exits Earth's gravitational zone of influence, after which the spacecraft will be placed in a huge halo orbit around L1.
  • This journey is expected to take approximately four months to reach the designated L1 point.

Aditya L1 - India’s First Solar Mission

The Aditya-L1 satellite is made up of seven distinct payloads. It is anticipated that the spacecraft will provide the most important information regarding the sun. Once Aditya-L1 reaches its target orbit, its primary payload, the Visible Emission Coronagraph, will be sending around 1,440 photographs each day to the ground station for analysis. According to IIA (Indian Institute of Astrophysics) authorities, the 190 kilogram VELC payload is planned to transmit photographs for the usual operating lifespan of a satellite, which is 5 years. However, depending on fuel use, its lifespan may be extended even further.
