OHPC History

Odisha Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (OPGC) is an Odisha government company. It operates cutting-edge thermal power plants in Banharpalli, Jharsuguda. It has a total capacity of 1740 MW (2x210 MW in the first phase and 2x660MW in the second). OPGC was established on November 14, 1984, as a completely owned government company of the state of Odisha, with the primary goal of operating, developing, and maintaining thermal power generating units. In the first phase, OPGC developed the IB Thermal Power Station with two units of 210 MW each in the Ib valley area of Jharsuguda District in the state of Odisha.The first of these Units began operations in 1994, and the second Unit followed in 1996. On the basis of a long-term power purchase agreement, the whole generation from these units is committed to Gridco, the state-owned Power Transmission & Trading Company. In 2019, two further units (Unit 3 & 4) with 660 MW each were built in the second phase, bringing the total capacity to 1320 MW, from the previous 420 MW at IB Thermal Power Station. In early 1999, as part of the state's energy sector reform, 49% of the equity was unloaded in favour of a private investor (American company), namely AES Corporation, USA. After AES's exit in December 2020, the GoO bought the 49% interest held by AES through another GoO subsidiary, Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (OHPC). As of December 10, 2020, OPGC will be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Odisha government. The company has received numerous state and national awards and recognition. By supplying safe, clean, and reliable power, OPGC has firmly established its credentials as a successful power generating company, both technically and economically.

OHPC Project Features

The Upper Indravati Project would be the initial phase towards developing the Indravati River's power potential in Odisha. The project possesses characteristics that are conducive to highly economical hydroelectric development, such as good water supply, low dams to produce a large regulating reservoir, reduced submergence, and a short water conductor system to concentrate a high head for power generation. The possibility of using the tail race releases to provide irrigation to a vast command area in the state's backward district is another appealing feature of the plan. The following are the primary works included in the Upper Indravati project:
  • Creating a reservoir with a gross storage capacity of 2300 Mcum at FRL + 642 m (2106.3 ft.) and a live capacity of 1435.5 Mcum above the MDDL of + 625 m (2050.62 ft.).
  • Water conductor system consisting of a 165-meter-long head race channel, a 4.32-kilometer-long, 7-meter-diameter head race tunnel with a discharge capacity of 210 cumecs, and a surge shaft.
  • 2 pressure shafts of 330 m length and 5.25 m diameter that bifurcate near the valve house;
  • 4 surface penstocks of 790 m length and 3.5 m diameter to lead the water to the power house; an overground power house with 4 units of 150 mw each running at an average gross head of 371.00m (1218 ft.)
  • 9 km tail race channel to discharge tail racewater into the Hati river
  • Aweir, 12.01 m high and 117 m long on the Hati river with a live storage capacity of 603.57 HM between RL 265 m and 260.4m to smooth out diurnal differences in power house discharges.
  • Two gravity canals 48.5 km long left bank and 70.4 km long right bank commanding an ayacut of 49085 hectares and 27195 hectares respectively, a lift canal 56.3 km long taking off immediately from the left side of the weir commanding an ayacut of 41400 hectares (the lift involved is 45.7 m).
  • The irrigation project is taking on the items of work from point (7) to point (9). The dam and its associated works are considered typical work for irrigation and power generation.
