UPSC ESE Medical Standards 2025

UPSC ESE Medical Standards 2025: Applicants who clear various stages of the UPSC ESE Selection Process , including Prelims, Mains, and Interview, must also meet the medical standards set by the Union Public Services Commission.

T he UPSC ESE Medical Standards include specific requirements in terms of height, weight, and chest expansion, among others. The medical standards are set to ensure the candidates are suitable for the Engineering services roles.

UPSC ESE Medical Standards 2025

The Union Public Services Commission set the specific medical standards for UPSC ESE 2025. The physical and medical fitness requirements must be met by applicants who have qualified for the written examination and interview in order to secure jobs within the various services or organizations chosen by them.

It is important to note that after checking the recommendations sent by the medical board, the final cadre allocation of the selected applicants will be done. The UPSC ESE 2025 examination will be conducted for recruiting 457 positions in various specializations including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

IES Officers Medical Standards 2025

Following the announcement of the final UPS ESE Results 2025, all applicants who qualify for the final list will have to undergo medical fitness examinations at various railway facilities provided by the Railway Board to determine whether they fulfill the IES Officers Medical Standards 2025.

The UPSC ESE medical examination is used to determine an applicant's eligibility for the various services and departments they have chosen. The UPSC ESE Medical Standards are outlined below.

Applicants interested in appearing for the Engineering Services Examination must ensure that they fulfill the UPSC ESE physical fitness norms such as height, weight, chest expansion, etc., as explained in the table below.

  • Female Applicants Height Criteria: 150 cm

  • Male Applicants Chest Expansion Criteria: 84 cm
  • Female Applicants Chest Expansion Criteria: 79 cm
  • For all services, the minimum chest expansion should be 5 cm.
Weight
  • BMI <35 is Acceptable
  • In Case Where BMI >35, Applicants Will be Declared Temporarily Unfit

IES Officers Medical Standards

In accordance with the UPSC ESE Medical Standards 2025, applicants are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination, which encompasses a range of tests aimed at evaluating various aspects of their physical health.

Eye Sight Test
  • A general examination will be performed to discover any unhealthy conditions of the eyes, eyelids, or adjoining structures that may render the applicant ineligible in the future.
  • Two tests will be used to determine visual acuity: one for distant vision and one for near vision.
Color Blindness
  • The examination of color perception involves the rapid and accurate recognition of red, green, and yellow colors using tools such as Ishihara's plates and Edrige Green's lantern in good lighting situations.
  • Based on aperture size and exposure length, color perception is divided into two categories: higher-grade color perception and lower-grade color perception.
Field of Vision
  • For the moving test, the applicant's field of vision is assessed by having them cover one eye and read text or identify the number of fingers shown by the examiner, beginning at the periphery and moving toward the center for the moving test.
Night Blindness
  • The night blindness test is not standard, but it may be performed in exceptional circumstances where the medical board has discretion.
  • The test involves either monitoring the applicant's visual acuity in low-light conditions or asking them to recognize items in a darkened room after 20 to 30 minutes.
Hearing Disorder
  • Eligible for non-technical roles if the hearing impairment exceeds 30 decibels at higher frequencies
  • Eligible for both technical and non-technical roles, the hearing loss is less than 30 decibels in speech frequencies ranging from 1000 to 4000.
Blood Pressure
  • For applicants between 15 and 25 years of age, a suitable average blood pressure is approximately 100 plus their age.
  • For applicants aged 25 and above, a satisfactory blood pressure is 110 plus half their age.
Diabetes Mellitus
  • The urine test results for sugar should be negative. If the medical board detects the presence of sugar, the case will be reviewed further.
  • The applicants will be evaluated fit if they meet the standards of medical fitness during this further assessment.

ESE Medical Fitness Test - Key Points to Remember

In addition to the aforementioned UPSC ESE Medical Standards 2025, selected applicants must also remember the below-listed key pointers regarding the ESE Medical Fitness Test:

  • The applicant's speech must be free of impediments.
  • The applicant's teeth must be in good condition, and dentures will be provided if necessary.
  • There should be no evidence of an abdominal illness. If an applicant is diagnosed with illnesses such as hydrocele, varicose veins, piles, and so on, they are first pronounced temporarily unsuitable and may be considered fit after receiving therapy or undergoing surgery. An applicant with Grade-I hemorrhoids is considered to be fit.
  • Applicants with well-formed limbs, hands, and feet, or non-degenerative conditions with the required limb motion for efficient service, are considered fit.
  • Applicants must be free of congenital deformities or defects.
  • Applicants must not have any chronic skin diseases.
  • Applicants must be free of communicable diseases.
  • Applicants who have had transplanted organs are deemed ineligible for the services.
  • Candidates who have a history of organ donation are fit if they are in good health.
  • The presence of any malignancies disqualifies the applicant.

Applicants may file an appeal against the Medical Board's decision within 7 working days of obtaining the medical results via email. Applicants must pay an appeal fee of INR 100 in order to start the appeal process, as mandated by the Government of India, Ministry of Railways.

In addition to the appeal, applicants have to submit a medical certificate from a certified doctor saying that they are aware that the applicant has been found unsuitable by the Medical Board.
