JEE Advanced Nationality Criteria 2027: Foreign Nationals, OCI/PIO and Eligibility Rules

Your nationality can change the way you apply for JEE Advanced. Foreign nationals do not follow the same JEE Main qualification route as Indian nationals, while OCI/PIO candidates have different provisions based on when they obtained their card. If you apply under the wrong category or miss the applicable documents and eligibility conditions, your registration and admission process can be affected.

The JEE Advanced Nationality Criteria 2027 cover foreign-national registration, OCI/PIO classification, eligibility requirements, nationality documents, supernumerary seats and reservation rules. Who Is Considered a Foreign National for JEE Advanced?

For JEE Advanced, a candidate who is not a citizen of India by birth or naturalisation is considered a foreign national. Foreign nationals can apply directly for JEE Advanced without appearing for JEE Main, provided they meet the other eligibility conditions.

The current rules are based on the JEE Advanced 2026 provisions. The corresponding 2027 provisions should be checked when the official JEE Advanced 2027 information is released.

Different Eligibility Options for OCI/PIO Candidates 

The treatment of OCI/PIO candidates depends on the date on which the OCI/PIO card was obtained. This is one of the most important parts of the nationality criteria.

OCI/PIO Cards Obtained After 4 March 2021

OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their cards after 4 March 2021 are considered OCI/PIO (F) candidates.

They:

• Are treated as foreign national candidates.

• Follow the eligibility conditions applicable to foreign nationals.

• Can compete only for foreign supernumerary seats.

• Do not receive reservation benefits under GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC or ST categories.

OCI/PIO Cards Obtained Before 4 March 2021

Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO cards before 4 March 2021 have two options under the current rules.

The choice has to be made while registering for JEE Advanced. Once submitted, the option cannot be changed at a later stage.

What Happens to OCI/PIO Candidates During Seat Allocation?

The category you choose affects how you are considered during seat allocation.

OCI/PIO (F)

OCI/PIO (F) candidates are considered under the foreign national provisions and can compete for foreign supernumerary seats.

A foreign candidate or OCI/PIO (F) candidate can be allotted a seat when the candidate's CRL rank is the same as or better than the closing rank of the corresponding OPEN Gender-Neutral pool program-section and the candidate satisfies the applicable GEN-category eligibility requirements.

OCI/PIO (I)

OCI/PIO (I) candidates are treated at par with Indian nationals for the applicable eligibility conditions.

At seat allocation, they can be considered for:

• OPEN seats

• OPEN-PwD seats, where applicable

• Female Supernumerary seats, where applicable

They are included in the Common Rank List (CRL) and/or CRL-PwD, subject to qualifying JEE Advanced and meeting the applicable requirements.

However, OCI/PIO candidates do not receive reservation benefits under GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL or SC/ST categories for seat allocation under the current provisions.

JEE Advanced Direct Registration for Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals do not have to qualify through the Indian-national JEE Main route before registering for JEE Advanced.

Direct Registration

Under the current rules:

• Foreign nationals do not have to appear for JEE Main.

• They can register directly for JEE Advanced.

• They must still satisfy the other prescribed eligibility criteria.

• They are considered in addition to, and not as part of, the 2,50,000 Indian-national candidates qualifying through the JEE Main route.

This direct-registration provision also applies to OCI/PIO (F) candidates.

Foreign National Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced

Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates who have studied or are studying in India or abroad at the 10+2 level or equivalent must satisfy all four prescribed JEE Advanced eligibility criteria.

B1: Age Limit

For JEE Advanced 2026, candidates had to be born on or after 1 October 2001.

A relaxation is available for candidates from countries where a minimum period of service in the armed forces or allied services is mandatory before or after Class XII or equivalent. Such candidates need to upload a certificate or testimonial from the competent authority during registration.

The age date for JEE Advanced 2027 should be checked in the 2027 information brochure.

B2: Number of Attempts

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years under the current foreign-national eligibility criteria.

B3: Class XII or Equivalent Examination

For JEE Advanced 2026, a foreign national candidate had to appear for Class XII or an equivalent examination for the first time in 2025 or 2026, with:

• Physics

• Chemistry

• Mathematics

as compulsory subjects.

Candidates who first appeared for Class XII or equivalent in 2024 or earlier were not eligible under the regular 2026 criteria.

The rules also clarify that appearing for Class XII means that the concerned Board declared the result for that year, regardless of whether the examination was actually conducted. Even if an individual candidate's result was withheld, the year could still be treated as an appearance.

B4: Earlier Admission at an IIT

A candidate should not have been admitted to an IIT under an academic program covered by the applicable JoSAA Business Rules, irrespective of whether the candidate continued in that program.

Candidates whose IIT admission was cancelled after joining an IIT are also not eligible under this criterion.

There are specific provisions for candidates who:

• Were admitted to an IIT preparatory course for the first time in 2025.

• Were allotted an IIT seat but did not report online or at a reporting centre.

• Withdrew before the last round of IIT seat allocation.

• Had their seat cancelled before the last round of IIT seat allocation.

Such candidates can remain eligible subject to fulfilling the other applicable criteria.

Seats and Reservation for Foreign Nationals

Foreign national candidates are considered for supernumerary seats, subject to the prescribed limit.

The 10% limit applies program-wise, and the foreign-national seats are additional to the regular seats.

Documents Required to Prove Nationality

Foreign-national and applicable OCI/PIO candidates need to provide identity documentation during registration.

Identity Proof

The current JEE Advanced provisions specify identity proof in the form of:

• Citizenship Certificate

• Foreign Passport

• OCI/PIO Card, where applicable

Candidates should upload the correct and complete documents required for their category during registration.

For candidates claiming a relaxation because of mandatory armed-forces service in their country, the relevant certificate or testimonial from the competent authority is also required.

JEE Advanced Nationality Criteria: Key Points to Remember

• A person who is not an Indian citizen by birth or naturalisation is treated as a foreign national.

• Foreign nationals can register directly for JEE Advanced without JEE Main.

• Foreign nationals are considered separately from the 2,50,000 Indian-national qualifying pool.

• Foreign-national seats are supernumerary, with a cap of 10% of total seats in each course.

• OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their cards after 4 March 2021 are treated as OCI/PIO (F).

• OCI/PIO candidates who obtained their cards before 4 March 2021 can choose between OCI/PIO (F) and OCI/PIO (I) under the current provisions.

• The OCI/PIO option must be selected during registration and cannot subsequently be changed.

• Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO (F) candidates must satisfy the four foreign-national eligibility criteria.

• Nationality proof is required during registration.

The JEE Advanced Nationality Criteria are different for foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates. Foreign nationals can register directly without JEE Main, while OCI/PIO candidates are classified according to when they obtained their cards and, in some cases, the option they choose during registration.
