NTA Notification On Optional Questions Discontinued, A Major Change by NTA Overview

With the recent activation of the official website for the upcoming Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2025, the NTA has also made an important announcement. An important change in the JEE Main 2025 Exam Pattern has been introduced, in which the option to select questions in Section B of each subject paper has been discontinued. This optional question selection, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to offer additional flexibility for applicants under stressful circumstances, allowed them to choose any five out of ten numerical questions in Section B. However, for JEE Main 2025 , the NTA has confirmed that this option will no longer be available. In a statement, the NTA explained, “The optional selection of questions was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to ease the pressure on students amid unprecedented challenges.” Now, as circumstances have returned to normal, the exam format will also return to its pre-pandemic structure, focusing on a consistent and comprehensive approach to the evaluation of all aspirants. Why Has NTA Discontinued Optional Questions From JEE Main 2025?

With the WHO officially ending COVID-19 as a public health emergency on May 5, 2023, NTA has decided to revert the JEE Main exam to its pre-COVID structure. This change removes the flexibility of selecting questions in Section B, which was introduced in 2021 to help applicants facing challenges during the pandemic. According to the NTA’s recent statement, starting with JEE Main 2025, all applicants will need to attempt all five questions in Section B for each subject without any choice. This update may require aspirants to adapt their preparation strategies to ensure they are fully prepared for every question type rather than selecting based on their strengths. For those gearing up for the exam, the return to the original exam structure means focusing more deeply on each topic in the JEE Mains 2025 syllabus , making thorough preparation important. While the flexibility during the pandemic helped reduce pressure, the new format encourages students to focus and understand all concepts fully. NTA Notification: New JEE Main 2025 Exam Format and Marking Scheme

JEE Main 2025 will continue with the three main sections—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Previously, test takers could select any 5 out of 10 numerical questions in Section B for each subject. However, in the next academic year, all five numerical questions in Section B will be mandatory, with no option to skip. The marking scheme remains the same. Applicants will earn 4 marks for each correct answer, and 1 mark will be deducted for incorrect answers. Despite this discontinuation of optional questions, the total marks for the exam remain the same, still being 300 marks.
