Announcement of Scientific Calculator Use

XLRI announced on November 28, 2024, that scientific calculators will be allowed in the XAT exam for the first time. Earlier, candidates could only use basic on-screen calculators or do calculations manually, which often took more time and could lead to mistakes. The official announcement said this new feature will help with tough calculations, making it easier and faster for candidates to solve questions.

Benefits of Using a Scientific Calculators

The use of scientific calculators in the XAT exam offers many benefits for students:
  1. Better Calculation Options : Scientific calculators can handle advanced math like logarithms, trigonometry, and statistics. This makes solving tough problems easier than before.
  2. Saves Time : These calculators help solve long and tricky calculations quickly, giving candidates extra time to focus on other questions. This is especially helpful for sections like Data Interpretation.
  3. More Accurate Answers : Scientific calculators reduce mistakes that can happen with manual calculations, helping students perform better in the quantitative sections.

Potential Impact on Exam Difficulty

While scientific calculators are expected to make some parts of the XAT 2025 exam easier, they also raise important questions:
  1. Harder Questions : With calculators now allowed, XLRI might include tougher questions that focus more on understanding concepts instead of simple calculations. This change could keep XAT known as one of the most challenging MBA entrance exams in India.
  2. More Competition : Earlier, candidates who were good at quick mental math had an advantage. Now, with everyone using advanced calculators, the competition might become tougher, making it harder to stand out.

Changes in Exam Structure

In addition to allowing scientific calculators, XLRI has implemented other changes for XAT 2025:
  • Exam Duration : The total duration of the exam has been reduced from 210 minutes to 180 minutes, with Part 1 (Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning) lasting 170 minutes and Part 2 (General Knowledge) lasting just 10 minutes.
  • Revised Question Distribution : The number of questions in the General Knowledge section has been reduced from 25 to 20. Additionally, the essay writing component has been removed from the written test and will now be part of the personal interview process for shortlisted candidates.

The use of scientific calculators in XAT 2025 is a big change in how students will handle this tough exam. These calculators will help with difficult calculations, making answers faster and more accurate, which is great for many students. However, this change might also bring harder questions and tougher competition. As the exam date gets closer, students should adjust their preparation plans to use this new tool wisely while staying ready for any changes in the exam pattern.
