Knee Joint, Anterolateral compartment of leg and dorsum of foot

One of the most complex joints of the body which supports the whole of the body weight. Knee joints have multiple ligaments which provide strength and stability while walking, running and jumping. It’s a type of hinge joint which allows flexion and extension. It is formed by articulation between the patella, femur and tibia.

It is formed from two articulations- tibiofemoral and patellofemoral. The joint surfaces are lined with hyaline cartilage and are enclosed within a single joint cavity. Knee ligaments are bands of tissue that connect your thigh bone to your lower leg bones. There are two types of ligaments in your knee one is Collateral and Cruciate ligaments There is a special type of C shaped fibrocartilage ring in the knee called menisci . There are two menisci namely lateral and medial menisci which deepens the articular cavity of Tibia.

Dorsum of foot

The dorsum of foot refers to the upper surface of the foot, where the extensor muscles are located. The dorsum of the foot is characterized by the presence of long tendons belonging to the extensor muscles of the leg. These tendons cross over the ankle joint to reach the dorsum of the foot . Among these tendons are the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus, and fibularis (peroneus) tertius muscles. All of these muscles contribute to dorsiflexion of the ankle joint.

Anterolateral Compartment of Leg

The muscles of the anterior leg are located within the anterior compartment of the leg. When observed macroscopically, this is seen as the anterolateral region of the leg. Because of the nature of their origins and insertions and consequently their movements, these muscles are known as the dorsiflexors of the leg; the reason for this is their origin at specific points on the tibia or fibula and insertion on certain areas of the foot. Because of that, contraction of these muscles will lead to a shortening of the muscle’s body and cause the dorsum of the foot to be pulled towards the leg. This movement is known as dorsiflexion. Also, certain muscles from this group assist in the inversion of the foot.

Knee Joint FAQs

What is foot drop?

Foot drop is an inability to lift the forefoot due to the weakness of dorsiflexors of the foot. This, in turn, can lead to an unsafe gait, potentially resulting in falls. It happens most commonly due to compression of the common fibular nerve.

What is an ACL injury?

It is a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee joint. It can be injured by changing direction suddenly, stopping suddenly Thats why its very much common in athletes of games like Football and Basketball.

What is Compartment syndrome?

Due to application of high pressure on legs for a long time in case of wrecks. After removal of pressure there is exudation of fluids and proteins in the outside compartment leading to swelling.

What is Crush Syndrome?

Trauma to the muscles can lead to leakage of intracellular proteins like myoglobin. These can clot the kidneys filtration system and can lead to acute kidney failure. High intracellular potassium can also leak from muscles and can lead to acute heart failure too.
