MCC has issued a notice for NRI quota eligibility in upcoming UG/PG counselling 2026–2027, outlining the conversion process and required documents
The notice is for upcoming UG/PG counselling 2026–2027 under the NRI quota.
It applies to candidates who were originally registered as Indian but want to claim NRI status.
The notice provides the procedure and document requirements for this conversion
The MCC's guidelines, established through a Supreme Court judgment (W.P No. 13393 of 2007, Anshul Tomar vs State of Madhya Pradesh, 2008), define who qualifies for the NRI quota. Candidates seeking to convert to NRI status for NEET PG Counselling 2026-27 must meet these specific conditions.
Here are the primary conditions for eligibility:
Parent as NRI: If either the mother or father is an NRI and ordinarily resides abroad, the student is eligible.
First-Degree Relative as NRI: A student is also eligible if a first-degree relative (including real brothers and sisters, in addition to parents) is an NRI and ordinarily resides abroad.
'Ward' (Palya) Interpretation: To qualify as a 'ward' (Palya) for NRI status, the following must apply:
The person must be the nearest relation.
The person must be an NRI and ordinarily reside abroad.
The person must have acted as the student's guardian, with evidence provided.
An affidavit confirming these details is mandatory.
For the purposes of the NRI quota, the committee has broadened the interpretation of 'nearest relation' for a 'ward' (Palya). This inclusive definition ensures that a wider range of family relationships can support a student's application for NRI conversion for NEET PG Counselling 2026-27.
a) He should be the nearest relation.
b) In the definition of the nearest relation, committee has considered following relative having blood
relations.
i) Real brother and sister of father i.e. real uncle and real aunt.
ii) Real brother and sister of mother i.e. real maternal uncle and maternal aunt.
iii) Father and mother of father i.e. grandfather and grandmother.
iv) Father and mother of mother i.e. maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother.
v) First-degree paternal and maternal cousins.
vi) Such person should be NRI.
c) Such persons should ordinarily be residing abroad.
d) Such person should have looked after such student as the guardian of the student and evidence
to that effect must have been produced before the committee by such person.
The specified blood relatives include:
Paternal Relatives: This covers the real brother and sister of the father (real uncle and real aunt), and the father and mother of the father (grandfather and grandmother).
Maternal Relatives: This includes the real brother and sister of the mother (real maternal uncle and maternal aunt), and the father and mother of the mother (maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother).
Cousins: First-degree paternal and maternal cousins are also included.
Beyond the relationship, the individual must be an NRI, ordinarily residing abroad, and must have actively served as the student's guardian. Verifiable evidence and a sworn affidavit are essential to substantiate these claims.
Applicants planning to apply for NRI quota seats or seeking nationality conversion from Indian to NRI/OCI are strongly advised to meticulously review these eligibility norms. It is crucial to have all necessary supporting documents ready before participating in the counselling process. The MCC emphasizes strict adherence to these Supreme Court-prescribed conditions throughout the admission procedure.
