Osteology: study of skeleton

Osteology is defined as the anatomical study of the skeletal system, or bones, in biology. In Greek language the meaning of the word osteos is bones. Skeletons play an important role in many living organisms. They provide a structure for the organism and often serve as a form of protection for the more delicate and vital organs, like the brain and the heart.

What are the types of bones?

Bones come in a wide range of sizes, from the tiny inner ear bones that transmit sound waves to the sensory organs, to the large femur bone, which can be nearly two feet long. Bones can be divided into three main groups namely long bones, short bones and flat bones.

Long bones

Long bones are one of the four main types of bones in the human body. These are characterized by their length, which is greater than their width. They have several crucial role in movement. Examples of long bones are femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius and ulna. Characteristic features of long bones Long bones have different parts namely diaphysis, epiphysis, metaphysis, medullary cavity periosteum and endosteum. 1 . Diaphysis is the central part of bone which is made up of compact bone and responsible for providing strength.
  1. Epiphysis is the rounded end of the long bone. Mostly, it consists of spongy part of bone which is covered by a layer of rigid bone.
  2. Metaphysis is the narrow portion of a long bone located between the diaphysis and the epiphysis. It contains the growth plate, also known as the epiphyseal plate, which is a layer of hyaline cartilage that allows the bone to grow in length during childhood and adolescence.
  3. Medullary cavity is the cavity of bone shafts which is the storage house of marrow. Medullary cavity has yellow marrow in adults and red marrow in children.
  4. Periosteum covers the outer surface of the bone. It is a dense fibrous membrane. It has two membranes the outer fibrous layer  and inner cellular layer. Periosteum is absent on the joint surface.
  5. Endosteum is a thin vascular layer which lines the inner surface of bone. It lines the medullary cavity, the trabeculae of spongy bone, and the central canals of compact bone.

Short bones

Short bones are a type of bone characterized by their nearly equal dimensions in length, width, and thickness. They are typically as wide as they are long, giving them a roughly cube-like shape. Characteristic features of short bones Like the long bones, short bones lack diaphysis or epiphysis. They are roughly cube-like structures with nearly all dimensions equal in all directions. Short bones composed mostly of spongy bone (cancellous bone) encased in a thin layer of compact bone. Their surface is covered by a periosteum. Short bones are involved in the functions of support stability and shock absorption. Carpals and tarsals represent the examples of short bones.

Flat bones

Flat bones are a type of bone characterized by their thin, flattened shape and broad surface. They are primarily composed of two layers of compact bone with a layer of spongy bone in between Characteristic features of flat bones Flat bones are thin flat as the name suggests. They are usually curved. Their structure is composed of two parallel layers of compact bone with a layer of spongy bone in between. The spongy bone contains bone marrow. The surface of the flat bones are smooth and provide a large area for attachment. These are mainly involved in providing protection to the vital organs. Some examples of flat bones are mentioned here. Scapula, pelvic bones, ribs, sternum and skull bones are some examples of flat bones.

Irregular bones

Irregular bones are a type of bone that do not fit into the standard categories of long, short, or flat bones due to their complex shapes. These bones have varied shapes and structures, often providing protection, support, and a range of other functions. Characteristic features of irregular bones Irregular bones are complex and irregular as the name suggests. These bones do not fit into the category of long short or flat bones.They can have multiple projections, ridges, and varied surfaces. Structure of irregular bones is composed of both compact and spongy bones. The inner spongy bone is usually surrounded by a thin layer of compact bone. Serve multiple roles including protection of nervous tissue, support for the body, and attachment points for muscles. Some examples of irregular bones are vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, mandible, maxilla, ethmoid bone and sphenoid bone.
