Osteomyelitis is a bone infection caused by bacteria or fungi . It can make your bones swell and damage, sometimes leading to bone loss. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, and in some cases, surgery may be needed to remove damaged bone or drain abscesses.
It affects approximately 2 to 5 out of every 10,000 people. It's one of the oldest known diseases, with scientists tracing it back more than 250 million years. Bone infections are more common in children's extended arm and leg bones, while in adults, they often affect the hips, spine, and feet.| Types of Osteomyelitis | |
