The coenzymes are organic compounds that loosely attach to the apoenzyme, while some cofactors, called prosthetic groups, are tightly bound to the protein. For example, the heme group serves as a prosthetic group in enzymes like catalase and peroxidase.

Importance of Cofactors

Cofactors are critical for the activity of many apoenzymes. When an apoenzyme binds with its specific cofactor, it forms a holoenzyme, which is the active form of the enzyme capable of catalyzing biochemical reactions.
