NMC New MBBS Seats 2025: In a historic step toward expanding India’s medical education infrastructure, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 10,650 new MBBS seats and sanctioned 41 new medical colleges across the country for the academic year 2025–26.
This move is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 Independence Day announcement, promising the creation of 75,000 new medical seats within five years. The total number of MBBS seats in India now climbs from 1,17,750 in 2024–25 to 1,37,600 in 2025–26.
The NMC approval for new medical colleges 2025 aims to improve healthcare accessibility and medical education quality nationwide. According to NMC Chief Dr. Abhijat Sheth, 170 applications were received, 41 from government and 129 from private institutions.
Out of these, 41 colleges received the green light. These institutions are strategically distributed across states to ensure balanced regional development in medical education.
The new MBBS seats in India 2025 are distributed among several states to address regional healthcare gaps. Below is an overview of the state-wise approvals:

This expansion aligns with the government’s focus on improving doctor-patient ratios and expanding access to medical education beyond metro cities.
With the addition of 41 new medical colleges approved by NMC in 2025, the total number of medical colleges in India now stands at 816. This includes both government and private institutions.
These new institutions are expected to begin admissions for NEET UG 2025 candidates once the NMC accreditation and seat matrix approval process concludes.
In addition to MBBS expansions, the National Medical Commission has also received proposals for 3,500 new and renewed postgraduate (PG) seats, potentially taking the total PG medical seat count to 67,000 for 2025–26.
This includes applications for MD/MS and DNB courses, which aim to bridge the gap in medical specializations and provide better opportunities for NEET PG-qualified doctors.
The addition of new NMC-approved MBBS seats and colleges is more than just a numeric boost — it represents a structural shift in India’s healthcare education system.
Key impacts include:
Improved Accessibility: More medical colleges in smaller states and union territories will allow local students better access to MBBS education.
Enhanced Quality: The NMC’s approval process ensures all new colleges meet updated infrastructure and faculty standards.
Balanced Growth: Expansion in both government and private institutions promotes equitable growth.
Skill Development: Collaboration with ICMR is expected to integrate clinical research into the MBBS curriculum, improving hands-on learning.
The NEET UG Counselling Round 3 results were declared, and college reporting has begun. For NEET PG Counselling 2025, registration for Round 1 started on the same date, with schedules to be announced shortly.
Once the NMC seat matrix for 2025–26 is finalized, these new seats will be integrated into the upcoming counselling rounds, offering candidates more choices for admission.
NMC officials confirmed that all pending approvals and seat allotment procedures will be completed within the stipulated time. A detailed blueprint covering accreditation, examination timelines, and seat matrix updates will soon be released.
The portal for new college applications for the 2025–26 academic session is expected to open in early November 2025.
