History of World Food Day

World Food Day was established by the FAO in 1979 to bring attention to the plight of hungry and food-insecure populations worldwide. The day was first celebrated on October 16, 1981 , and quickly gained traction, with over 150 countries now participating. In 1996, the World Food Summit declared food security a fundamental righ t, emphasizing access to sufficient, nutritious food for all. Over the years, the day’s focus has evolved from merely addressing hunger to a more comprehensive view that encompasses sustainable agriculture, food systems, nutrition, and climate change.
Do You Know? Goal 2: Zero Hunger , part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals , aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition by 2030.

World Food Day 2024 Theme

Each year, the FAO announces a new theme reflecting current global food security challenges. The theme for World Food Day 2024 is “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future.” The World Food Day 2024 theme emphasizes the importance of making food accessible, affordable, and diverse for everyone.

Challenges to Food Security Worldwide

Despite efforts to combat hunger, the world faces several challenges to food security, with 10% of the global population affected by hunger. These challenges include:
  1. Conflict and Violence: Conflict remains the primary driver of hunger, affecting nearly 135 million people in 20 countries.
  2. Climate Change: Increasing temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events continue to disrupt agricultural productivity, particularly in low-income countries.
  3. Economic Disparities: Global inequality in wealth distribution limits access to nutritious food for billions. Over 2.8 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet in 2022 (UNICEF).
  4. Food Waste: It is estimated that one-third of all food produced globally is wasted, which increases the divide between the haves and the have-nots.
  5. Overpopulation: As the global population continues to grow, particularly in developing countries, the demand for food will outpace supply unless sustainable farming practices are implemented.
These challenges highlight the urgent need for comprehensive solutions, which organizations like the World Food Programme aim to address.

World Food Programme

According to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024 (SOFI) report, one in eleven people around the world is facing hunger. The World Food Programme (WFP) is a United Nations agency dedicated to fighting global hunger. Established in 1961, it is the largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and food security, working in over 80 countries. The WFP d elivers food assistance in emergencies and works with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. It also provides direct food aid and engages in initiatives to strengthen food supply chains in conflict-affected and climate-vulnerable regions. Through these efforts, the WFP aims to create a world where everyone has reliable access to sufficient, nutritious food.

Food Security in India

India is home to one of the largest populations in the world, and ensuring food security for all its citizens remains a significant challenge. However, the country has made remarkable progress in recent years through a combination of policy initiatives, programs, and technological advancements in agriculture. Some key government initiatives for ensuring food security in India are:
  • National Food Security Act (NFSA ): Enacted in 2013, the NFSA aims to provide subsidized food grains to approximately two-thirds of India’s population.
  • Public Distribution System (PDS): This system distributes essential food items like rice, wheat, and sugar at subsidized rates to low-income families, covering 99.01% of beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) of 2013.
  • Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) : Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, this scheme provided free food grains to vulnerable populations.
  • Mid-Day Meal Scheme: Providing free meals to school children, improving nutrition and school attendance.
Recent improvements in agricultural productivity have also contributed to food security. The productivity of rice and wheat increased from 2,995.21 kg/ha in 2018-19 to 3,052.25 kg/ha in 2021-22. These advancements reflect a commitment to enhancing food security which is evident in state-wise improvement in the overall composite score of Goal 2.
