Students who perform well in the Indian National Olympiad Examinations (INO) are invited to appear for the OCSC Stage.

The number of students selected varies by subject, typically around 35 per subject for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Junior Science, with 50 for Astronomy.

OCSC gathers the most talented students from around the nation and offers them advanced training, problem-solving experiences, and guidance from experts.

What is OCSC?

Students who excel in the Indian National Olympiads (INPhO, INChO, INBO, INAO, and INJSO) are invited to take part in the OCSC.

The camp offers not only advanced training but also acts as the final selection venue for students who will represent India in International Olympiads such as IPhO, IChO, IBO, IOAA, and IJSO.

Step-by-Step Path: NSE to OCSC

The Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) is the third stage in the selection process for various Indian National Olympiads, including chemistry, physics, biology, and others. Here are the details of stages that lead to OCSC.

1. Stage I: National Standard Examinations (NSEs): These are Conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) are the first stage for various subjects like physics (NSEP), chemistry (NSEC), biology (NSEB), and junior science (NSEJS).

2. Stage II: Indian National Olympiads (INOs): Top-performing students in NSE qualify for INO organized by  the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

3. Stage III: The OCSC is designed to orient students with theoretical and experimental tasks at the Olympiad level. It includes lectures, experiments, and tests to assess students' skills.

What Happens at OCSC?

The leading students from the INOs (around 35 in each subject) are invited for the third stage, the Orientation-cum-Selection Camps (OCSCs) conducted at HBCSE from April to June.

During these camps, students receive orientation for the Olympiad level of theoretical, experimental, and observational (for astronomy) tasks.

A strong emphasis is placed on building conceptual foundations and enhancing problem-solving capabilities.

Students are introduced to innovative experiments with an emphasis on conceptual and procedural comprehension in experimental science. 

In astronomy, students are instructed in fundamental concepts related to astrophysics, astronomical data analysis, and observing the night sky. Numerous theoretical and experimental/observational assessments are conducted during the camp.

Based on their performance in these assessments, a select few students are chosen to represent India at the international Olympiads.
