A strong undergraduate education needs to do more than teach students what to know. It must prepare them to apply that knowledge, work with emerging technologies, and solve real-world problems. With AI changing the skills required across industries, BITS Pilani is rethinking how students learn and prepare for their careers.
The institute is revamping its undergraduate curriculum with greater emphasis on AI, interdisciplinary learning, research, and practical experience. The changes also include a Rs 50 crore investment in upgrading undergraduate laboratories across its Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses.
The growing use of AI has changed the skills students need to develop during their academic journey. Simply understanding a concept may not be enough. Students also need to know how to apply it, evaluate information, and solve unfamiliar problems.
BITS Pilani's curriculum revamp aims to make learning more practical and flexible. Around 250 faculty members from different departments and campuses contributed to the revision, along with inputs from industry partners, alumni, and students.
The key changes include:
Greater exposure to AI and emerging technologies.
More opportunities for research and project-based learning.
Interdisciplinary electives across different fields.
Better industry exposure and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Greater emphasis on physical and mental wellbeing.

The revised curriculum introduces several changes to improve the overall undergraduate learning experience.
BITS Pilani is expanding AI education beyond traditional computer science subjects. Students will get opportunities to explore how AI applies to fields such as chemistry, biology, and management.
The curriculum introduces computational thinking, programming, and Foundations of Data Science, along with subjects such as AI in Chemistry.
Students can also explore areas such as:
Software Construction
Quantum Information and Computation
Astronomy
Materials Chemistry
The institute also explains AI education through three stages: Adoption (learning to use AI tools), Absorption (understanding how they work), and Application (using them to solve problems in a specific field).
For example, chemistry students could explore AI-based molecular analysis, while management students could study its applications in demand forecasting and business decisions.
The revised curriculum gives students more opportunities to learn by doing. Engineering Design and Prototyping, project work and experimentation will play a greater role in undergraduate education.
BITS Pilani is also strengthening research through three programmes:
|
Programme |
Credit hours |
|
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) |
9 |
|
Advanced UROP |
18 |
|
Super UROP |
27 |
These programmes allow students to take up research projects with faculty guidance. The institute also supports over 100 student projects addressing societal challenges and entrepreneurship through funding and access to research facilities.

Practical learning requires access to the right infrastructure. BITS Pilani is investing Rs 50 crore in upgrading undergraduate laboratories across its three campuses.
The upgraded facilities aim to give students better opportunities to experiment, conduct research, and work on practical projects, particularly in science, engineering, and technology-related disciplines.
Students will have more opportunities to explore subjects beyond their primary specialisation. The revised curriculum encourages learning across science, engineering, computing, humanities and arts.
This can help students understand how different fields connect. For instance, developing an AI-based healthcare solution may require knowledge of both computing and biology.
Such exposure can help students build broader perspectives and apply their subject knowledge to challenges beyond their chosen discipline.

BITS Pilani is also strengthening the connection between classroom learning and workplace requirements.
Its Practice School programme gives students opportunities to work on industry assignments, interact with professionals and understand real business challenges.
The institute is also encouraging entrepreneurship by helping students develop ideas, test solutions and explore opportunities to turn them into products or ventures.
The curriculum revamp also recognises that college education involves more than academic performance.
Through its Points of Experience framework, students are required to complete 30 points, equivalent to approximately 60 hours of activities.
These activities include:
Fitness and physical activities
Creative pursuits
Wellbeing workshops
Social conduct
Community engagement
These points are recognised separately from academic credits, encouraging students to participate in activities that support their overall development.

Introducing AI into classrooms also requires teachers to understand how these technologies work and how to use them in teaching.
BITS Pilani's Teaching Learning Centres are supporting faculty development through workshops and training initiatives. The institute is also involving alumni working at companies such as OpenAI, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Google in AI teaching.
The aim is to help faculty members rethink classroom activities, assignments, and assessments so that students develop independent thinking and practical problem-solving skills.
The changes at BITS Pilani reflect a broader shift in undergraduate education. Students will have more opportunities to apply classroom concepts, explore emerging technologies, participate in research, and gain industry exposure.
For students interested in technology careers, developing foundations in programming, Data Science and Generative AI, and Machine Learning can also help build relevant technical knowledge.
The larger takeaway is that undergraduate education is moving beyond learning concepts and preparing for examinations. Students also need opportunities to experiment, think independently, and understand how their knowledge can solve real-world problems.

BITS Pilani is making changes to its UG curriculum to help students learn beyond textbooks and apply concepts in real-world situations.
AI will find a place across subjects such as chemistry, biology and management, not just computer science.
Rs 50 crore will go towards upgrading undergraduate labs across the Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses.
Students will get more opportunities to take up research projects through UROP, Advanced UROP and Super UROP.
More hands-on projects, design work and prototyping will become part of the learning experience.
Practice School will help students gain exposure to industry projects and workplace expectations.
Students will also spend around 60 hours on activities such as fitness, creative pursuits, wellbeing and community engagement.
