Class 10 English Chapter 1 Summary A Letter to God

A Letter to God is the first chapter of the CBSE Class 10 English textbook First Flight. Written by G.L. Fuentes, the story highlights the themes of faith, innocence, hope, and humanity through the life of a poor farmer named Lencho.

Lencho was a hardworking farmer who lived with his family in a small house on a hill. His entire livelihood depended on the crops grown in his field. He eagerly waited for rain, as it was necessary for a good harvest. When the rain finally arrived, Lencho was overjoyed. However, his happiness was short-lived because the rain soon turned into a devastating hailstorm. The hailstones destroyed his crops completely, leaving him and his family with no food and no source of income.

Despite the destruction and despair, Lencho did not lose hope. He had unshakable faith in God and believed that God would help him in his time of need. Since Lencho could read and write, he decided to write a letter directly to God. In the letter, he asked God to send him one hundred pesos so that he could sow his fields again and save his family from starvation. He addressed the letter to “God,” put a stamp on it, and dropped it into the mailbox.

When the postman found the letter, he was amused and showed it to the postmaster. Although the postmaster initially laughed, he was deeply touched by Lencho’s strong faith. Not wanting Lencho’s belief in God to be broken, the postmaster decided to help him. He collected money from his colleagues and added some of his own salary. However, they could only gather seventy pesos. The postmaster placed the money in an envelope and sent it to Lencho, signing it as “God.”

The following Sunday, Lencho came to the post office to check for his letter. He was not surprised to receive money, as he fully trusted God. But when he counted the amount and found only seventy pesos, he became angry. Lencho believed that God could not make a mistake. He immediately wrote another letter to God, complaining about the missing thirty pesos. In the letter, he accused the post office employees of stealing the money and requested God not to send the remaining amount through the post office again.

Conclusion of A Letter to God Chapter 1 English

The story "A Letter to God" beautifully portrays faith, kindness, and irony. It highlights Lencho's deep belief in God, showing how faith can give people hope even in difficult times.

The postmaster’s generosity reflects the goodness of human nature, as he and his colleagues secretly help Lencho. However, the irony lies in the fact that Lencho, despite receiving help, distrusts the very people who supported him, assuming they stole part of God's aid.

This teaches us an important lesson about having faith in humanity as well, not just in the divine. The story leaves readers reflecting on the power of faith, gratitude, and perspective in life.
