CBSE Class 8 English Honeydew Chapter 1 The Best Christmas Present in the World Summary

The story begins when the narrator buys an old roll-top desk from a junk shop in Bridport. It was in poor condition, but affordable. He planned to fix it and brought it home. On Christmas Eve, he started working on it. As he opened the drawers, he found them badly damaged. The last drawer was stuck and needed force to open.

Inside, he discovered a hidden compartment containing a small tin box. A note on it read: “Jim’s last letter, received January 25, 1915. To be buried with me when the time comes.” Inside the box was a letter addressed to Mrs. Jim Macpherson, from 12 Copper Beeches, Bridport. The letter was dated December 26, 1914.

The letter was from a soldier named Jim Macpherson, a British officer, written to his wife, Connie. In the letter, Jim described a peaceful moment on the battlefield during World War I. On Christmas morning, the German and British troops came out of their trenches to celebrate Christmas together. They exchanged greetings, shared food and drinks, and even played a friendly football match.

Jim mentioned how a German officer named Hans Wolf approached him and introduced himself. They talked about music, books, and their homes. Even though they belonged to enemy nations, they found friendship and joy for that one day. Jim wrote that he wished wars could be settled with football matches, as no one gets hurt that way.

After the celebration, the soldiers returned to their trenches. Jim ended the letter by telling Connie that the day’s events were some of the happiest moments of his life, and he hoped the war would end soon so they could be together again.

After reading the letter, the narrator felt it was important to return it to its rightful owner. He found the address, but the house had been damaged by fire. A neighbor told him that Mrs. Macpherson had survived and was now staying in a nursing home nearby.

The narrator visited the Burlington House Nursing Home and met Mrs. Macpherson, who was now elderly and in a wheelchair. He introduced himself as a friend of her husband and gave her the letter. Her eyes lit up with happiness, and she mistook him for her husband. She believed that he had returned after all these years. Overwhelmed with emotion, she talked about how she had missed him and had even baked a Christmas cake for him.

The story ends on a touching note as Mrs. Macpherson, after waiting for so long, finally felt her husband had come back to her, bringing the "best Christmas present in the world"—his letter and the love it held.
