CBSE Class 8 English It So Happened Chapter 3 The Selfish Giant Notes

Once upon a time, there was a Giant who had a magnificent garden. This garden was filled with lush trees, beautiful flowers, and playful children. However, the Giant was very selfish and did not want anyone to enter his garden. Whenever the children tried to play in it, he would chase them away, saying that only he had the right to enjoy it.

The children, who loved the beauty of the garden, were deeply saddened by this. They had no other place to play, so they wandered around in the streets and alleys.

As time passed, the Giant became more and more isolated. He built a high wall around his garden to keep the children out. After this, the garden became silent, and the beautiful flowers and trees stopped blooming. The once vibrant garden turned into a cold, desolate place. Even the birds stopped singing, and the winds ceased to blow. Winter reigned in the garden all year round.

One day, while walking around his garden, the Giant saw a little boy trying to climb a tree to reach its branches. The child had small wounds on his hands, which were the marks of nails – a sign of love. The boy explained that these were the wounds of love, and he invited the Giant to his garden, which had now turned into a paradise.

Upon hearing this, the Giant realized how selfish and cruel he had been. His heart softened, and he felt deep regret. He understood that love, not selfishness, brought true happiness. The Giant invited the children back into his garden and let them play freely. His garden bloomed once again, and it became a joyful place for everyone.

At the end of the story, the Giant died under a tree in his garden, surrounded by white blossoms. The children, who had once been barred from the garden, found him lying there, and they saw the beauty of his transformation – his selflessness and love for others.
