CBSE Class 9 English Beehive  Notes Chapter 4 A Truly Beautiful Mind

A Truly Beautiful Mind is a short biography of Albert Einstein, a brilliant scientist born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany. He didn’t speak until he was two-and-a-half years old, and when he did, he repeated each word twice.

As a child, his friends called him "Brother Boring," and his mother thought his large head was strange. Einstein loved playing with mechanical toys and noticed that his younger sister’s toys were different, without wheels.

Einstein’s school headmaster once said he was hopeless and foolish. Although his headmaster was critical, he did well in school and became a skilled violinist by the age of six, thanks to his mother’s encouragement. By fifteen, Einstein felt unhappy with the strictness of his school, so he left.

After his parents moved to Milan, Einstein stayed with relatives and continued his education in Switzerland. Later, he joined a university in Zurich, where he could explore new ideas freely. In 1902, he began working at a patent office in Bern, reviewing inventions while secretly working on his Theory of Relativity. At university, he met Mileva Maric, a bright fellow student. They married in 1903 and had two sons but later divorced in 1919. In the same year, he remarried Elsa, his cousin.

In 1905, Einstein published the Special Theory of Relativity, which showed that time and space are not fixed. This led to his famous equation, E = mc², which describes the relationship between mass and energy. In 1915, he introduced the General Theory of Relativity, which changed the understanding of gravity. His work was confirmed in 1919 when a solar eclipse supported his theory, and the media called it a “scientific revolution.” He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.

In 1933, when the Nazis took control of Germany, Einstein moved to the United States to protect his research from being used for destructive purposes. After the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938, Einstein warned President Franklin D. Roosevelt about the dangers of atomic bombs.

When the U.S. developed and used atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Einstein was devastated. He wrote a letter to the United Nations, urging the creation of a world government to prevent further destruction. In his later years, he advocated for democracy and world peace. Einstein passed away in 1955 at the age of 76 and is remembered as both a scientific genius and a visionary.
