CBSE Class 9 English Beehive  Notes Chapter 6 My Childhood

"My Childhood" is an excerpt from Wings of Fire, the autobiography of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It narrates his early years growing up in a middle-class Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram. His family, including his parents, three brothers, and a sister, lived in their ancestral home. Kalam's parents were hardworking and kind, always ready to help others. Despite lacking formal education, they treated everyone equally and often shared meals with outsiders. Kalam credits his parents for teaching him values like honesty and self-discipline.

His family followed a secular approach, participating in Hindu festivals and hearing stories from both the Ramayana and Prophet Muhammad. This openness towards other cultures influenced Kalam's upbringing, encouraging him to be inclusive and tolerant. He had three close friends—Ramanadha Sastry, Aravindan, and Sivaprakasan—who were from orthodox Hindu Brahmin families. Despite their religious differences, they shared a strong bond and respected one another. As they grew up, they pursued different professions, but their friendship remained strong.

One incident that stood out in Kalam’s childhood was when a teacher, upset by his Muslim identity, asked him to move to the back of the class, despite being seated next to Ramanadha. This upset Ramanadha, who wept at the unfair treatment. After discussing the incident with their families, Ramanadha’s father took action, confronting the teacher and demanding an apology for his behavior. The teacher complied, and from then on, he treated all students equally.

Kalam also recalls his science teacher, Sivasubramania Iyer, a strict Hindu Brahmin who treated everyone with respect. Once, when invited to Iyer’s home for a meal, the teacher’s wife refused to serve Kalam, but Mr. Iyer insisted on serving him himself and eating with him. Later, Mrs. Iyer changed her attitude and served Kalam the next time, which demonstrated the power of tolerance and understanding.

As Kalam grew older, the end of World War II sparked a sense of hope for India's independence. Inspired by the wave of optimism, he asked his father’s permission to leave Rameswaram and pursue further studies in Ramanathapuram. His father, while supporting his decision, reminded him that while parents love their children, they should not impose their own desires on them.
