The Adventures of Toto by Ruskin Bond is a fun and light-hearted story about a mischievous monkey named Toto. The narrator’s grandfather loved animals, and one day, he bought a little monkey from a tonga-driver for five rupees. He already had a mini zoo at home with pets like a tortoise, squirrel, rabbits, and a goat—Toto became the newest member.
Toto was a cute monkey with shiny eyes and sharp teeth. His long tail acted like a third hand. Since the narrator’s grandmother didn’t like animals, Grandfather kept Toto hidden in a closet. But Toto was full of mischief—he tore the wallpaper, broke the peg, and ruined the narrator’s blazer.
Later, Toto was shifted to a cage where the other pets stayed. But he kept troubling them too. When Grandfather had to go to Saharanpur, he took Toto along in a canvas bag. Toto jumped inside the bag at the station, causing a scene. When they reached Saharanpur, Toto popped his head out and made the ticket-collector laugh, but still, Grandfather had to pay three rupees as a fare—for a “dog”!
Eventually, Grandmother accepted Toto, and he was kept in the stable with the donkey, Nana. But Toto wouldn’t stop troubling Nana either. He loved bathing in hot water and once even jumped into a boiling kettle, from which Grandmother had to rescue him just in time.
Toto’s naughty behavior only got worse. He broke dishes, tore clothes, and once grabbed a plate of pulao during lunch. When people tried to stop him, he threw water at them and ran up a tree, dropping the plate from the top and breaking it.
In the end, Toto became too much to handle. The family was tired of his tricks, and Grandfather sadly sold him back to the tonga-driver for just three rupees.
The Adventures of Toto is a humorous and engaging story that highlights a pet monkey's playful yet troublesome nature. Through Toto's endless mischief, Ruskin Bond shows the challenges of keeping wild animals as pets. Although Toto was smart and entertaining, his actions caused damage and trouble for the family.
The story reminds us that animals, especially wild ones, may not always adjust to domestic life. As part of the CBSE Class 9 English Moments syllabus, this chapter helps students understand animal behavior and relationships, with expected questions based on the exam pattern focusing on theme and character traits.
