CBSE Class 9 English Moments Notes Chapter 8 A House is Not A Home

“A House Is Not a Home” is based on the author, Zan Gaudioso’s experience as a teenager. He talks about the struggles he faced when he switched schools and moved to a completely new environment. The narrator shares a real incident from his life that deeply affected him.

He had joined a new school and found it difficult to adjust. He often felt lonely and missed his old teachers and friends, visiting them regularly. His teachers advised him to take part in activities at his new school to meet new people and make friends.

One Sunday afternoon, while doing his homework, the narrator noticed smoke coming from the ceiling of his house. Soon, the entire room was filled with smoke, and they had to rush outside to see flames spreading across the roof. Panic-stricken, the narrator ran to his neighbors to call the fire brigade. Meanwhile, his mother rushed back into the house to save important documents and photos of his late father.

The author was terrified as his mother risked her life. The fire brigade arrived and rescued them, wrapping them in blankets. But the narrator was heartbroken when he realized his pet cat was missing and feared it might have died in the fire.

After the fire was finally put out, the family moved to his grandparents' house. Zan felt embarrassed when he went to school in the same clothes as the day before, feeling insecure about his situation. He missed his old school, friends, and especially his cat.

When he visited his old house later, he was shocked to see the destruction caused by the fire. The house was ruined, with everything damaged by the fire and the water used to put it out. He was most upset about the loss of his cat, as he couldn’t save it.

News of the fire spread at his new school, and his loss saddened everyone. They helped him with clothes, notebooks, and other supplies. The author was touched by their kindness and started making new friends, no longer feeling alone.

A month later, Zan returned to his old house, which was being rebuilt, along with his new friends. To his surprise, a woman came forward with his cat. Overjoyed, he thanked her for bringing his pet back. His friends celebrated with him, and he felt immense gratitude for the woman’s kindness. The overwhelming sadness he had felt started to fade away, and he realized how lucky he was to have his friends, his cat, and his life back.
