Micrometer

Nov 24, 2022, 16:45 IST

Have you ever needed to take an extremely accurate measurement? various industries that work with small parts and fittings need to make accurate measurements. The measurement have to be close to the exact value in many places to avoid potential danger. To achieve such accurate and precise measurements, we will focus on micrometers. In this article, we will discuss the micrometer in detail.

What is Micrometer?

A micrometer is an instrument used to make the precise linear measurements of dimensions such as diameter, thickness, and length of solids. It is generally made of a C-shaped frame with the movable jaw controlled by an integrated screw. Therefore, the accuracy of the measurement usually depends on the pitch of the screw, while the accuracy of the measurement totally depends on the accuracy of the screw-nut combination.

It is often confused with the micrometer (μm) - the unit of length. The another common name used for a micrometer is a micrometer caliper because of its similar appearance to a caliper.

Parts of a Micrometer

A micrometer consists of the following parts:

  1. Frame- It is a C-shaped body that holds the anvil and barrel in constant relationship to each other. The frame is heavy and has a high thermal mass. To prevent significant heating, it is covered with insulating plastic.
  2. Anvil- The shiny part to which the spindle moves and the pattern rests.
  3. Barrel - A stationary round component with a linear scale.
  4. Screw - Located inside the barrel and considered the heart of the micrometer.
  5. Locknut - A component that can be tightened to hold the spindle.
  6. Spindle - The shiny cylindrical part that causes the thimble to move toward the anvil.
  7. Ratchet Stop - A device at the end of the handle that limits applied pressure by slipping at a calibrated torque.

Principle of Micrometer

Micrometers transform small distances into large screw revolutions that can be read on a scale. The principle of operation of a micrometer is as follows:

  • The amount of rotation of a precision-made screw can be directly and accurately correlated with a certain amount of the axial movement (and vice versa) through a constant known as screw lead. A pitch of the screw is the distance that it moves axially forward in one complete revolution (360°).
  • With the appropriate lead and major screw diameter, axial movement will be amplified in the circumferential movement.

When is a Micrometer Used?

A micrometer is used when a precise measurement is needed. The following is a list of micrometer applications:

  • Machines with moving parts: Parts that move in and out, such as pistons, must remain in a steady straight line, or the slightest wobble can lead to malfunctions.
  • Bearings and pipe fittings need accurate measurements to function optimally.
  • Micrometers are the preferred tool for measuring the thickness of objects such as metals.
