BPSC Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains, Interview Pattern & Marking Scheme

The BPSC Exam Pattern 2026 helps candidates understand the structure of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) before starting their preparation. The selection process is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview. 

Each stage assesses different skills, from general awareness and analytical ability to answer-writing and personality. A clear understanding of the exam pattern, marking scheme, exam duration, and qualifying criteria allows candidates to plan their preparation more effectively and maximise their chances of success.

BPSC Exam Pattern 2026

Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) conducts the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) to recruit candidates for various Group A and Group B posts in the Bihar Government. Understanding the BPSC Exam Pattern 2026 is essential for effective preparation, as it helps candidates understand the structure of each stage, marking scheme, qualifying criteria, and selection process.

The BPSC examination is conducted in three stages:

• Preliminary Examination

• Main Examination

• Interview

BPSC Selection Process 2026

The BPSC recruitment process consists of the following stages:

The General Hindi and Optional Subject papers are qualifying in nature and are not included in the final merit list.

BPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

The Preliminary Examination serves as the first stage of the selection process. It is conducted to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.

The Preliminary Examination is qualifying in nature, and the marks obtained are not included in the final merit list.

BPSC Prelims Marking Scheme 2026

Candidates should understand the marking scheme before appearing for the examination.

New OMR Rule

BPSC has introduced a fifth option (E – Not Attempted) in the OMR answer sheet.

• Candidates who wish to skip a question must mark Option E.

• Leaving all options blank attracts 1/3 negative marking.

• Selecting more than one option is considered an incorrect answer.

This change encourages candidates to mark unanswered questions correctly while filling the OMR sheet.

BPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2026

Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination are called for the Main Examination. The Mains consists of descriptive papers along with qualifying papers.

Qualifying Papers in BPSC Mains

Two papers are qualifying in nature:

General Hindi

• Maximum Marks: 100

• Minimum Qualifying Marks: 30%

• Marks are not added to the final merit list.

Optional Subject

Candidates appearing for the BPSC Mains Examination must choose one optional subject from the list prescribed by the Bihar Public Service Commission. The Optional Subject paper is objective (MCQ) in nature and is qualifying only. Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed for their category, but the marks obtained in this paper are not included in the final merit list.

Category-wise Qualifying Marks

Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in the Optional Subject paper to be eligible for the BPSC Mains examination. The qualifying percentage varies according to the candidate's category, as shown below. 

 BPSC Interview Pattern 2026

The BPSC Interview is the final stage of the selection process and carries 120 marks. Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are called for the Personality Test, where the interview board evaluates their overall personality, communication skills, decision-making ability, leadership qualities, and suitability for administrative services. The final merit list is prepared by combining the marks obtained in the Mains examination and the Interview.

• Decision-making ability

• General awareness

• Administrative aptitude

• Personality and confidence

Final Merit List

The BPSC Final Merit List is prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Interview. The marks scored in the Preliminary Examination, General Hindi, and the Optional Subject paper are not considered for the final ranking, as these papers are qualifying in nature.

The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination, General Hindi, and Optional Subject are not included in the final merit calculation.
