Lata Mangeshkar, a legendary playback singer, was known for her distinct voice and vocal range of more than three octaves. She was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, India. She was the oldest of five siblings. Her father was Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, and her mother was Shevanti. His father was Master Dinanath, a well-known Marathi theatre figure. She was introduced to music at a young age. At the age of 13, she recorded her debut song for Vasant Joglekar's Marathi film Kiti Hasaal.
Lata Mangeshkar's birth name was "Hema". Later, her parents nicknamed her Lata after a female character, Latika, from one of her father's plays, BhaawBandhan. Her siblings' birth names are Meena, Asha, Usha, and Hridaynath. All are skilled vocalists and musicians. Her educational background is not well recognised, but she demonstrated that a degree is not the only way to earn. Her father gave her her first music instruction. When she was five years old, she began working as an actress in her father's musical productions.

Lata Mangeshkar’s singing career started in 1942. Her first song was for a Marathi film, but it was not included in the final movie. She acted and sang in a few more films, but her big break came in 1949 with the song “Aayega Aanewala” from the film Mahal. This song made her famous all over India.
After 1949, Lata became the most sought-after playback singer in Bollywood. She sang for many famous music directors like Shankar-Jaikishan, Anil Biswas, and many others. Her voice was unique, sweet, clear, and full of emotion. She sang songs in more than 36 Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and others. Over her long career, she recorded thousands of songs for more than 2,000 Indian films.

She passed away on February 6, 2022, in Mumbai at the age of 92. Her ashes were immersed in the Godavari River at Ramkund, Nashik.
