The Odisha Secondary School Teacher Eligibility Test (OSSTET) is a state-level examination conducted to determine candidate suitability for secondary school teaching positions in government, aided, and recognized private schools across Odisha. 

Candidates interested in applying for Category I (Education Teachers) or Category II (Physical Education Teachers) must satisfy all academic qualifications, professional training standards, age boundaries, and nationality rules before filling out the online application form. Meeting these eligibility parameters is mandatory for obtaining the OSSTET qualifying certificate.

OSSTET Detailed Eligibility 2026

Nationality and Odia Language Proficiency

To be eligible for OSSTET 2026, candidates must meet basic citizenship and regional language competency rules set by the Odisha Department of School & Mass Education.

1. Nationality

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.

2. Odia Language Requirement

Candidates must be able to read and write Odia. An applicant can fulfill this condition by satisfying any one of the following criteria:

  • Passed the High School Certificate (HSC) Examination conducted by BSE Odisha or an equivalent exam with Odia as a First, Second, or Third Language.

  • Passed the +2 / Higher Secondary Examination conducted by Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, with Odia as an examinable subject.

  • Passed the Odia Single Subject Examination of HSC standard conducted by BSE Odisha.

  • Candidates applying for language teacher posts (Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Telugu) who have not passed HSC with Odia must pass the Odia examination of 7th or 8th standard conducted by BSE Odisha.

Educational Qualifications for Category I (Education Teachers)

Category I covers Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) in Arts, Science, Hindi, and Classical Languages. Candidates must possess the relevant academic and training qualifications as detailed below:

Sanskrit Teacher Bachelor’s Degree with Sanskrit as Honours/Elective/Pass subject with 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PH/SEBC) OR Shastri (Sanskrit) with 50% aggregate (45% for reserved categories). Sikshya Shastri (Sanskrit) or B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognized institution.
Urdu Teacher Alim with 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PH/SEBC) OR B.A. (Persian) with 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PH/SEBC). B.Ed. / Urdu B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognized institution.
Telugu Teacher Bachelor’s Degree in Arts with Telugu as a subject with 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ST/PH/SEBC). Telugu B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognized university or institution.

Note: Candidates in the final year of their professional training courses (e.g., final year B.Ed. or C.P.Ed.) are also eligible to appear for the exam.

Educational Qualifications for Category II (Physical Education Teacher)

Candidates applying for Physical Education Teacher positions under Category II must fulfill the following educational criteria:

  • Academic Requirement: Passed +2 / Higher Secondary or its equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% for SC, ST, PH, and SEBC candidates).

  • Professional Qualification: Passed C.P.Ed. / D.P.Ed. / B.P.Ed. / M.P.Ed. from a recognized Board or University.

OSSTET Age Limit 2026

Understanding the age rules is essential before registering for the exam:

  • Minimum Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 21 years old at the time of application.

  • Upper Age Limit: The Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, does not prescribe an upper age limit for appearing in OSSTET. Candidates of any age above 21 years who fulfill the educational requirements can take the test.

  • Recruitment Age Relaxation: While OSSTET itself has no upper age ceiling, state government recruitment rules apply when candidates apply for actual teaching positions in schools.

OSSTET 2026 Number of Attempts

Candidates can attempt the OSSTET examination multiple times. There is no restriction on the number of attempts a candidate can make. Once qualified, the OSSTET pass certificate remains valid indefinitely as per the NCTE guidelines
