Daily Current Affairs 13 April 2026 covers important developments across polity, environment, science, space, and infrastructure for UPSC Prelims and Mains. It discusses Bauxite mining conflicts and legal requirements under the PESA Act, focusing on tribal rights and environmental impact.
Daily Current Affairs 13 April 2026 also covers the MoU between FIU-IND and I4C for cybercrime and financial fraud prevention, advancements in Temperature-Controlled Nanomaterials, ISRO's Integrated Air Drop Test for the Gaganyaan Mission, and the importance of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) like the Dankuni-Surat DFC for logistics efficiency.
Recent clashes in Odisha highlight tensions between industrial development and tribal rights.
PESA Act, 1996: Mandatory Gram Sabha approval
Forest Rights Act (FRA): Protects forest dwellers’ rights
Local tribal communities often raise concerns regarding:
Lack of genuine consultation with the Gram Sabha.
Negative impacts on biodiversity due to deforestation.
Adverse effects on water resources and traditional tribal livelihoods.
The broader development vs. displacement debate, where economic progress often conflicts with the rights and well-being of indigenous populations.
Bauxite is the ore of Aluminum. It is typically soft, porous, reddish-brown, and contains a good aluminum content. Despite its utility, it is not very hard.
Bauxite is highly versatile and used for:
Aluminum production.
Refractory Materials: Used to create materials capable of withstanding high temperatures without melting.
Abrasives: Utilized as rough materials for grinding or rubbing, such as in removing old paint.
Various applications in chemical industries.
Global: Primarily found in tropical regions, with major reserves in countries like Guinea, Australia, Brazil, and China.
India: Significant reserves are located in Odisha, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.
The largest global Bauxite reserves are found in Guinea and Australia.
China is the largest global Aluminum producer, followed by India and Russia.
Odisha accounts for approximately 41% of India's Bauxite resources and 70% of its production.
Important Bauxite mines in Odisha include Panchpatmali (Koraput), Sijimali (Rayagada, Kalahandi), Niyamgiri Hills (Kalahandi, Rayagada), and Gandhamardan (Bargarh).

Mains GS Paper 3: Environment vs development
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) to foster collaborative efforts against financial fraud and cybercrime.
Purpose: Manages financial intelligence and monitors transactions to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing.
Establishment: Formed in 2004.
Role: Plays a crucial role in preventing financial crimes both domestically and internationally.
Structure: An independent body that reports to the Economic Intelligence Council (EIC), which is chaired by the Finance Minister.
Initiative of: Ministry of Home Affairs.
Purpose: Addresses and prevents cybercrime across the country.
Functions: Coordinates efforts among various law enforcement agencies (state police, other agencies) to enhance cybercrime investigation and prevention.
Key Components:
National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal: Allows citizens to report cyber fraud.
National Cyber Forensic Laboratory: Supports forensic investigation and research.
Cyber Crime Ecosystem Management Unit: Ensures coordination within the cybercrime ecosystem.
The collaboration aims to improve fraud detection, identify red flag indicators (signs of suspicious financial activity), and relay this information to financial institutions. It also provides guidelines for cyber fraud prevention and seeks to enhance readiness against the rapidly increasing digital payment fraud.
Prelims: Institutions & functions
Mains GS Paper 3: Internal security
Nanomaterials are substances typically ranging from 1 to 100 nanometers in size (1 nanometer = 10^-9 meters). At this scale, materials exhibit a high surface-to-volume ratio, leading to altered electronic properties, structural characteristics, and optical properties compared to their bulk counterparts.
These are nanomaterials whose properties can be intentionally modified by changes in temperature. They often exhibit a lower melting point, high thermal sensitivity, and are stimuli-responsive, meaning temperature changes can induce variations in their shape, conductivity, or optical properties.
Such materials are used in advanced devices and biomedical systems, like for precise drug delivery.
Scientists at the Center for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (Bengaluru), under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, demonstrated the ability to switch nanomaterials from nanodisks to nanosheets by manipulating temperature, leading to the emergence of new properties.
Prelims: Science basics
Mains GS Paper 3: Technology
The Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT) is a critical component of India's ambitious Gaganyaan Mission.
The Gaganyaan Mission aims to be India's first crewed space flight. It plans to send three astronauts to an altitude of 400 km (Low Earth Orbit) for a 3-day mission. The astronauts are projected to land in the Indian Ocean upon their return.
Purpose: To ensure the re-entry safety and successful recovery of astronauts.
Execution: Conducted by ISRO.
Procedure:
A 5-ton dummy crew module was dropped from a height of 3-4 km using an Indian Air Force helicopter.
Parachutes were deployed to reduce the module's speed to approximately 8 meters per second.
The module landed in the sea and was subsequently recovered by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
Collaboration: This test showcased effective cooperation among ISRO, the Indian Air Force, DRDO, and the Indian Navy.
Prelims: Space missions
Mains GS Paper 3: Space technology
DFC Definition: Specialized railway networks exclusively designed for freight trains, operating separately from passenger train lines.
Necessity: On shared tracks, freight trains face frequent halts for passenger trains, causing delays, time overruns, and increased cargo movement costs. DFCs mitigate these issues.
Benefits:
Reduced logistics cost: Aims to lower India's logistics cost to 8-10% of GDP.
Increased rail freight share: The National Rail Plan targets increasing the rail freight share to 45% by 2030. This is crucial as the railway's share of freight has reduced, and DFCs offer a cost-effective solution.
Initiation: The DFC initiative began in 2006.
Executing Body: Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Ministry of Railways.
Funding Support: Provided by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and the World Bank.
Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor: Connects Ludhiana to Dankuni.
Western Dedicated Freight Corridor: Connects Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (Mumbai).
Length: Approximately 2000 km.
Route: Connects Surat (Gujarat) to Dankuni (West Bengal).
States Covered: Passes through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Integration: It is integrated with the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
Benefits: Facilitates faster freight movement and integrates with ports and industrial corridors, promoting industrial development.
