Guru Nanak Jayanti, widely known as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, stands as one of the holiest observances in the Sikh faith. It celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru and the founder of the Sikh faith. In 2025, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be observed on November 5, which coincides with Kartik Purnima, the full moon day of the Kartik month. The day carries a deep spiritual meaning as it reminds followers to live by Guru Nanak’s core teachings of one God, equality of all people, honesty, humility and selfless service to humanity.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi di Talwandi, which is now known as Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. His birth is celebrated on Kartik Purnima as it symbolises the arrival of divine wisdom and light. Guru Nanak’s life and teachings were based on three guiding principles: Naam Japo, Kirat Karo and Vand Chhako, meaning remember God, work honestly and share with others. He rejected social inequality, caste discrimination and blind rituals, promoting the belief that God resides in every human being regardless of status or faith.
The celebrations start two days earlier with the Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. On the day before Guru Nanak Jayanti, devotees take part in Nagar Kirtan, a colourful religious procession led by the Panj Pyare, or Five Beloved Ones, while singing hymns and spreading messages of peace. On the main day, people gather at gurdwaras for prayers, kirtans and the community meal known as Langar, which is served to all without distinction. Homes and gurdwaras are decorated with lights and flowers to signify the triumph of knowledge and faith.
