The Story of the Indian Tricolour

The journey of India's national flag is a tale of struggle for identity. It all began before 1906 when various flags represented different freedom movements. In 1906, the first unofficial flag was proudly hoisted in Kolkata. Later, the flag kept evolving, such as Madame Cama raising the Berlin Committee flag in Germany in 1907, followed by the Home Rule movement flag in 1917. Mahatma Gandhi also proposed a flag in 1921 with a spinning wheel (charkha) against a red, white, and green backdrop, symbolising progress and self-reliance. Finally, in 1931, the Congress Committee officially adopted the tricolour (saffron, white, and green strips with the charkha in the centre) as the flag of Independent India. This flag design was later modified, and on July 22, 1947, the current national flag ‘Tiranga or Tricolour’ was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. In this flag, each colour holds a significant meaning:
  • Saffron: Represents courage and sacrifice.
  • White: Stands for peace and truth.
  • Green: Symbolizes fertility and auspiciousness.
The Ashoka Chakra, with its 24 spokes, signifies the eternal wheel of law and progress.
