PM Vishwakarma Yojana is a central sector scheme launched by the Prime Minister of India on September 17, 2023. The scheme focuses on supporting artisans and craftsmen who practice traditional trades. The scheme had a huge response after its launch, and the official website, PM Vishwakarma Yojana login, pm.vishwakarma.gov.in, received two million applications to date. 

The PM Vishwakarma Yojana is being implemented by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Under this scheme, artisans and craftsmen are referred to as ‘Vishwakarmas’, who are engaged in handicrafts and other small-scale industries.

Objectives of PM Vishwakarma Yojana

The PM Vishwakarma Yojana was launched to honor artisans and their traditional practices by referring to them as ‘Vishwakarmas’. This scheme entitles those craftsmen to several financial and technical benefits. The key objectives of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana can be summarized as follows:

• Collateral-free loans are offered to Vishwakarmas at a low rate of interest and subsidies so that they continue with their traditional trades.

• The initiative focuses on providing basic and advanced skills to the craftsmen in their traditional trades, helping them improve their skills via training programmes.

• Under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, craftsmen and artisans will also be provided with tools and technology to improve their quality of work and productivity.

• They will also be trained to use digital and cashless transactions and will be offered incentives to adopt these processes.

• The Scheme aims to provide economic opportunities to the artisans by integrating into the formal economy and global supply chains.

Eligibility for PM Vishwakarma Yojana 

Traditional artisans play a crucial role in our society and contribute towards the preservation and promotion of India’s rich cultural heritage of traditional crafts.  The eligibility details for the scheme can be summarized as follows:

1. The artisan and applicant must be at least 18 years of age at the time of registration.

2. The applicant should be enrolled and practicing any of the 18 traditional trades in the unorganised sector, specified in the scheme.

3. The craftsmen registering for the scheme should be dependent on using their hands and other tools while working with the traditional trade.

4. Applicants who are already registered under the PM-Svanidhi scheme are not eligible for the PM Vishwakarma Yojana. 

5. Only one member of a family is eligible for the scheme and must be participating in the traditional trade for atleast 5 years.

Benefits of PM Vishwakarma Yojana

PM Vishwakarna Yoajan was introduced to support the artisans and craftsmen practicing traditional trades in India. The need for PM Vishwakarma Yojana can be summarized as follows:

• Providing the ‘Vishwakarmas’ with the sources and skills to help them improve their trade practices.

• Ensuring economic stability for the artisans by integrating them into the formal economy. Providing them with modern tools and credit facilities at a low rate of interest.

• Preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage of traditional trades and craftsmanship.

•  Providing sustainable livelihoods to traditional artisans through financial assistance, credit facilities, modern tools, and training programmes.

Recent Development on PM Vishwakarma Yojan

The PM Vishwakarma Yojana has been launched initially for five years between 2023 to 2028. The financial outlay for the scheme is INR 13,000 Crore. Almost 2 million applicants have been received on the official website to avail the benefits of this scheme.

Recently, the District Project Management Units (DPMUs) have been appointed under the scheme to generate awareness regarding the PM Vishwakarma Yojana among the beneficiaries and inform them about the dates for training programmes, location, benefits, stakeholders, and more. As of now, 497 DPMUs are covering 618 districts in India

Once the initial outlay and the duration end, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana will be reviewed for its efficiency and achievements. Based on these findings, a decision will be taken on whether to continue the scheme with the same outlay or to bring about certain changes within the scheme.
