Sahitya Akademi Award 2024

The Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 list has been released, featuring the names of winners in 21 languages. These awards will be presented to the winners during a ceremony, as announced by Madhav Kaushik, the president of the Sahitya Akademi.

The Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 winners will receive a plaque, a shawl, and Rs 1 lakh during the presentation ceremony on March 8, 2025. The awards for the remaining three languages (Bengali, Dogri, and Urdu) will be announced later.

About Sahitya Akademi Award

The Sahitya Akademi Award is one of India’s most prestigious literary honours. Established to recognise outstanding literary work, the award has a rich history of celebrating authors who contribute significantly to Indian literature. The Sahitya Akademi Award was first given in 1955 to promote and honour literary excellence in Indian languages. It is conferred annually by the Sahitya Akademi to the 24 writers with the best literary works in 24 recognised Indian languages . A total of 1,239 books have been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award across all 24 languages so far.

Sahitya Akademi Award 2024

The Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 has recently been announced for 21 languages out of 24, celebrating the literary achievements of authors from various languages. A total of 21 writers including Gagan Gill have been honored for their exceptional contributions to literature. The Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 winner list covers works published between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. Soon winners in Bengali, Dogri, and Urdu languages will be announced and awards will be presented on March 8, 2025.

Eligibility for Sahitya Akademi Award

To be eligible for the Sahitya Akademi Award, a book must meet the following requirements: Literary Contribution: The work must be an outstanding contribution to the language and literature it represents. It can be either a creative or critical work, but it must not be:
  • A translation
  • An anthology of multiple authors
  • An abridged version, compilation, or annotated work
  • A research treatise or university degree-related work
  • A work by an author who has already received an Akademi Award (except for the Translation Prize, Bal Sahitya Puraskar, or Yuva Puraskar)
  • A recipient of the Bhasha Samman
  • A Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi
  • A work by an author who is a member of the Executive Board of the Akademi
Publication Requirements: Revised editions or fresh collections of previously published writings are ineligible. However, if at least 75% of the content in a collection is newly published in book form, it may be considered. Incomplete Works : An incomplete work is eligible only if the submitted portion of the book is self-contained and complete. Posthumous Works: A posthumous book is eligible if the author passed away within the five years preceding the award year.

Sahitya Akademi Award Prize Money

The prize money associated with the Sahitya Akademi Award is ₹1 lakh (100,000 INR) . In addition to this monetary award, winners receive:
  • A plaque: An engraved copper plaque recognizing their achievement.
  • A shawl: A traditional shawl presented during the award ceremony.
  • A citation: A formal acknowledgment of their literary contributions.
