Exemption from UPSC Compulsory Indian Language Paper

The UPSC Compulsory Indian Language Paper (Paper A) is a mandatory paper. However, certain candidates are exempted from this paper based on their state of origin and linguistic background. This exemption is granted to accommodate aspirants from regions where the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution are not commonly taught or spoken. Candidates from the following states are not required to appear for Paper A:

2. Manipur
3. Meghalaya
4. Mizoram
5. Nagaland
6. Sikkim

• Essay Writing (100 Marks): This section requires candidates to write an essay on a given topic. The essay should be coherent, well-structured, and demonstrate proficiency in the chosen language.
• Reading Comprehension (60 Marks): This section involves reading a passage and answering questions related to it. The focus is on understanding the main ideas, themes, and details.
• Precise Writing (60 Marks ): This section tests the ability to summarize passages concisely.
• Translation (20+20=40 Marks): The translation task involves converting passages from English to the chosen language and vice versa. These passages test the candidate’s understanding of professional language skill
• Grammar and Basic Language Skills (40 Marks): This section assesses knowledge of grammar and language usage. Questions on syntax, vocabulary, and grammar rules are included in this paper.
