UPSC Compulsory Language Paper 2026: The Mains is the second stage in the UPSC Civil Services Examination,  having 9 papers. Of these, Paper A is the compulsory Indian language paper. This paper is qualifying in nature and does not count towards your final merit ranking, but failing to qualify will result in your main exam being disqualified.

Candidates must score the minimum required marks in the Compulsory Indian Language Paper; otherwise, evaluation of their essay, general studies, and Optional Papers will not be considered. UPSC Compulsory Language Paper 2026

The UPSC Mains consists of two compulsory language papers , one in a compulsory Indian language and the other in English. For the Compulsory Indian Language Paper in UPSC Mains, candidates are required to select one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.  
They can choose from various languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, and others. UPSC Language Paper Pattern

UPSC Mains Compulsory Indian Language paper is worth 300 marks and tests candidates' reading, writing, and comprehension skills. The qualifying marks for UPSC Compulsory Language Papers are 25%, i.e.,  75 marks
Candidates from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, and Persons with Benchmark Disability (only Hearing Impairment sub-category)  are exempted from this paper.  Here is the exam pattern of the Compulsory Indian Language paper:

Exemption from UPSC Compulsory Indian Language Paper

The UPSC Compulsory Indian Language Paper (Paper A) is a mandatory paper. However, certain candidates are exempted from this paper based on their state of origin and linguistic background. This exemption is granted to accommodate aspirants from regions where the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution are not commonly taught or spoken. Candidates from the following states are not required to appear for Paper A:

  1. Arunachal Pradesh
  2. Manipur
  3. Meghalaya
  4. Mizoram
  5. Nagaland
  6. Sikkim
