Rhinos in India

India is home to the greater one-horned rhinoceros, also called the Indian rhino. These animals are mostly found in the north-eastern parts of the country. They live in swamps, grasslands, and forests near rivers.

• In the early 1900s, Indian rhinos almost disappeared. Their numbers had dropped below 200 due to hunting and habitat loss. Strong conservation programs saved them from extinction.
• Currently, India has more than 3,000 rhinos, which is a big success story in wildlife protection. Most rhinos in India are found in Assam, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. Assam has the highest population. The state is famous for its national parks, which are safe homes for these animals.
• However, Rhinos still face threats from poaching for their horns. Habitat destruction caused by floods and human expansion is another problem. India is seen as a global leader in rhino conservation due to its progress.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is the most famous home of the Indian rhino. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers a large area of grasslands and wetlands. The park has the highest number of one-horned rhinos in the world.

• Kaziranga is special because it shows how conservation efforts can succeed. In the early years, the park had only a few rhinos left.

Project Rhino in India

India has taken many steps to save rhinos. One of the major initiatives is Project Rhino. This program was started in 2011 in Assam to bring together all groups working for rhino protection. It is not a single project but a joint platform for government bodies, NGOs, researchers, and local people. The objectives of Project Rhino in India can be summarized as follows:

• Protect rhinos from poachers.
• Improve habitats by maintaining grasslands and wetlands.
• Relocate rhinos to new areas to spread the population.
• Involve local communities in protection.
• Use technology to monitor rhinos and track movements.
